Subject: Cowbell Revolution: Update

A while back, I posted about a Cowbell Revolution. It'd be a way for us to spread some good athlete vibes to each other.  I can't speak for my wife, but I've loved the smiles, waves, and positive feedback I've gotten from cyclists.  We've been "belling" quite a few riders, and it's been a lot of fun!

A few weeks ago, I was driving back from work on a road called Southwest Parkway.  It has 3 lanes in each direction with a large median between them.  The shoulder is pretty good, and I usually see a few cyclists out there.  As I came to the base of a hill, I saw a cyclist working his way up.  I grabbed my cowbell, put my hand through my moonroof and started clanging.  I looked back at him in my mirror and he had a huge smile on his face.  He gave a quick wave and kept working his way up and over the hill.

Another day, my wife and I passed a group of cyclists.  She rolled down the passenger window and started clanging some support.  They all smiled and picked up the pace a bit.  As they caught us at a stoplight, the lead cyclist smiled and said, "Cowbell... Always need more cowbell."  We all cracked up.

So... are YOU part of the Cowbell Revolution?

-Joel

We have a cowbell the wife brings to all my races. The boy loves to ring it.

I had read your thread awhile back and thought it was a great way to show support. I decided to put one in my truck. I always hang it out the window when I see someone riding or running but I dont get any waves or smiles. People look at me like im crazy especialy people driving with me. This hasnt stopped me though. I will continue doing it because I might get that one person that is stuggling for motivation and  me and my cowbell may just be what that person needed at that moment. Thanks for the idea.

I keep my cowbell in the console of my truck and do this whenever I can.  I usually try to start belling a ways back so I don't surprise them as I come up on them in my truck.

Terrific idea - carrying it in the truck. I just got my cowbell last week for my GF's 1/2 Iron coming up in June. But that would be a great way to extend its use by having it in the vehicle.

I sorta want to toot the horn when I'm coming up on cyclists while I'm driving but I don't as I wasn't sure if they'd receive it as the intended encouragement or just be annoyed but who can mistake a cowbell? That's perfect!

Someone cowbelled my husband the other day. He did a track stand at a light on a secondary road, and as he took off when it turned green, a guy in a Buick LeSabre rang a cowbell out of his sunroof. Hubby gave him a big thumbs-up, and it really made his day. I told him I had read about it on this forum. He's keeping a cowbell in his car now, too, to keep paying it forward.

I'm part of it now.  I cowbell the hell out of runners, cyclists and walkers.  I get the occasional blank looks.  However, majority are smiles and waves.  Those that know what it is for, get it.  Those that don't, I hope they stick to it and eventually figure it out.

I keep meaning to get one, I think it's such a great idea.  I bet the cyclists I pass are pissed when I just lean out the window and yell "COWBELL" at them.  Not the same outcome.

In Canada, they sell them at Sport Chek (one of the biggest sporting goods chains -- roughly equivalent to Dicks or Academy Sports in the US)

There is an old guy, probably in his 70's that parks himself on a bench along side the American River Bike Trail just outside of Folsom, Ca. what seems like everyday. As riders who are pushing the pace hard go buy he yells encouragement and rings his cowbell. I need to stop and talk to him to check out his story as he rides a tricked out roadie with aero wheels, but his cheering and cowbell are always appreciated! I need more cowbell!

I know the guy you're talking about!!!  "Pushing the Pace" is a very relative term in my case, but he's hollered some encouragement to me before when I huff and puff past him.  I remember thinking, "Wow, that was nice... this old guy looks like he'd SMOKE me up that hill!"

To the OP - great thread.  I've got a cowbell in my garage (any self-respecting Sacto Kings fan still has one laying around from the good old Laker-Kings playoff days), and it will be making it's way back into my glove box!

If I honk my horn I typically get the finger, I guess they can't tell an encouragement honk from a get out of the way honk

I hate getting honked at even if its the short little tap-honk. Honking is so stressful for some reason

Cowbells on the other hand, haven't heard of using them outside of races but this is a great idea!!

I ordered a cowbell from trisports.com and always keep it in my car.

Unfortunately there are not many riders or runners in our area (I mean when I am in the car)
