Not sure if you saw the e-mail but here it is:

Open water swimmers,

Now that spring is here, it's about time to start thinking about open-water swimming again.  Historically, we start the Wednesday night Lake Hartwell swims the first week in April, but the water temperatures are colder than average this year.  The lake is still below 60 degrees, so most of us are not too eager to jump in the lake just yet.

The first lake swim of the season will be on April 17 (two weeks from today), by which point the water temperatures should (hopefully) be in the upper 60s.  That's still quite chilly, but around the temp that we usually start the swims.

For those that are new to the mailing list, the short version is:  we swim in Clemson between 5:30 and 7:00 pm on Wednesday evenings.  No RSVP is needed, just show up, make some friends, and have fun.  Full details are below.

There will be a few changes to the lake swims this season.  The most visible of these is that we've lost the kayak support this year.  One of our regular kayakers is out of the country, another is injured, and I have used up my influence with the others.  So there will be no safety boats on the lake in April and May, as we have had in previous years.  Instead, the April / May swims will take the same format as the June - October swims always have, with support via the buddy system and safety in numbers, rather than a kayak escort.

I'll send regular updates about water temperatures, weather, and upcoming swim events in the early part of the season, dropping down to very infrequent emails as the season goes on.

See you at the lake,

-Steve Stuart

In my experience the lake warms up pretty quickly once there are a couple of really sunny days in a row. April is pretty chilly but by May the water is fine. By race day the water is warm enogh to get by without a wetsuit.

I would love to come out to the Clemson swims but I work in Spartanburg and to be able to get there in time I would have to leave work crazy early...

I have signed up for the Clemson Tri, going to be the first race of the season for me...goign to be a bench mark to see how little my training actually is.

Other guys at your workplace make it at least occasionally.

Getting back into triathlon finally.  This will be my first tri of the season also.  And only my second tri since IMKY 2011!

I am considering Clemson on the 11th, live in Greer.  Have done some Tri's when I lived up North, only one in late summer last year in Indiana and the Furman Tri in July.  Had a bad experience (caught in weeds) and my confidence in swim segment is low.   Just purchased my first wetsuit arriving Sat, and hoping to try it once or twice at the Y and get one open lake practice in before the 11th to see how it feels.  Where do folks meet on Wednesday evenings at Clemson?  I'm an old, slow guy (58) with a goal to do 3-4 Sprints each season to stay in shape.

So it has not been the warmest lately and especially with all the rain the last few days...does anyone know how the water temps are?  I don't have a wetsuit and was wondering if I need to scramble to find one before this weekend...

It's hard to say right now. It looks like it's going to get warmer this week, but I'm not sure how soon it'll warm the water up. Last year, it was warm enough that I swam comfortably with no wetsuit. Also, with the swim, you're only looking at a 15-20 minute swim, so as long as you get in the water and acclimate for awhile, the air temp should be high enough on Saturday that it shouldn't be miserable.

You may not have to worry about the swim. If the thunderstorms happen as predicted it will be another  duathlon.  The weather has really sucked for Set-up Events this year.

I swam in Hartwell 2 weeks ago in a full suit and was hot after about 500 meters. I am planning to go again Wed and will report back. I also am planning on riding the bike course as a preview.

That would be great thanks.  I did find a friend who is very similar in size to me that has a wetsuit he is going to let me borrow.  I believe it is a sleeveless, will be taking it just in case.

I really hope it is not turned into a duathlon, I am using this as a bench mark for the rest of my training for my A race...

i was cold last week when i swam it, but i was warm at the end of the swim (1900 yards).  people out there with sleeveless were visibly shivering before and after though.

hopefully the thunderstorms hold off for the morning at least

One of the swimmers had a pool thermometer and had a reading of 65 near the shore and 67 near the buoy out in the sun. It felt a little cooler than that at first but in a full suit I warmed up quickly

They usually post the waves a day before so you can get a pretty good idea of knowing when you will start.
