Pre-race routine:

Up early, breakfast...drive to Richmond. Love the shuttle from the Diamond to the race site. Worth the money to not have to find a parking lot and deal with the road closures in the city when I don't know my way around it.
Event warmup:

Waited for Jen, just hung out by the costume judging area. Porta potty stop--she laughed because when I set my cow bells down they fell to the floor and all you could hear was clanging bells.
On our walk over to the start area we overheard a man giving his daughter instructions for the kids 1 mile run. "Remember, go easy the first quarter mile" DUDE, the kid is maybe 5 or 6 at the most. To her a quarter mile has no relevance, it might mean first few seconds....We had a good laugh

Comments:

My wave went off at 8:47, I quickly realized that my cow bell costume was a total pain in the keester. I had to hold it up the entire course or it would go lopsided. Made it challenging to keep loose and have fun with the crowd/ volunteers.
Given that my ankle and leg were bothering me most of the week I was trying to let the body parts dictate my effort. Did pretty well keeping my effort in check. Loved the Spirit group that had all the glitter. They made for a fun group. There were a fair number of other spirit groups out there but the glitter girls seemed most enthusiastic.
The bands were pretty good. Most of them made comments about needing more cowbell as I ran by which was always amusing since that's what I say all the time.
Really tried to pick up my effort at the 5 mile mark, but somehow missed that mile marker and the next thing I knew I was at 6 miles so I turned on the "after burners" as best as I could.
What would you do differently?:

NOT try and make a costume with a hula hoop in it again. Less to get messed up in.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around Monroe Park, grabbed 3 bottles of water and a banana.....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my costume

irritation from the leg and ankle all week had made my running even questionable for the day

Event comments:

My favorite race, I don't try to do it for PR because it is capped at 40,000 participants and you have to be in the first few waves to really have a clear course.

The overall winners did it in 28 minutes, local runners top field were around 31 minutes. Freaking FAST!

Not sure how many women in my AF (50-54) but I was 432 of that group.
5801 of all women
9310 of 40,000 Not a bad day at all.

Age Group: 0/
Overall: 0/40,000
Performance: Good
pretty consistent splits 9:20-9:30 (for what I got, the HRM didn't turn on at the start when I hit it so I turned it on at mile 1 when I realized it. HR averaged 168
Course: Love this course, with the exception of a short area at mile 1 and mile 5 that are cobbled it is pretty smooth and easy. Congestion but not overly so. There have been more waves added in the past years so it was definitely less congested than a few years ago.

Dang, lady, you really mooooo-ved it yes, more cowbell! Less hula-hoop!

That is pretty dang fast for a costumed chick in a crowded race with a bum baby-cow.

Cool outfit!  Mooooo!

Mental note next time - you don't need more cowbell.

Hey, you did sub-1 hour!

Dude, you want running help from me?

You just had an awesome race while wearing a hula-hoop cow contraption.

Great work!
