Subject: hip pain? bursitis??

Background:  Through the winter I have been running about 3 days a week, 4 miles on the treadmill.  Semi-consistently.  I also have a history of low back pain/sciatica.  With the nice weather, I have obviously switched to running outside.  I like to run on local trails - our trails are fairly easy.  This is southeast Virginia - I don't have REAL hills.  Last Tuesday I ran ~4.5 miles on a favorite trail and hobbled around with low back pain for 2 days after.  Friday I ran 4 on paved roads, no pain after (besides normal tired feet, tight muscles).  Sunday I ran 5 miles on the same trail as Tuesday and I am back to hobbling around like an old lady.  It is NOT the sciatica or typical low back pain - a hot yoga class stretched everything out really nicely last night.  But my HIPS - the JOINTS - are still on fire.  I couldn't sleep comfortably all night, sitting is torture.  Walking doesn't feel TOO bad.

Is this possibly bursitis?  I hate to google symptoms and diagnose, but I did, and this sounds similar.  Are the trails the culprit and I should stick to roads/paved paths?  Is this bad enough to bother with the doc?  At what point?  Help, BT!

ran ~3miles last night on sidewalks/streets, and only have minor "normal" arthritis pain, none of the intense burn and in a different location than it was earlier in the week.  guess trails are out for me.

Where is the exact location of the pain?

Bursitis in the hip is usually felt on the outside of the hip. If you're feeling pain in the front of your leg/quad or in your groin, then it's likely not bursitis.

Where are you hurting?  Groin?  The outside (lateral) area? In your butt?  Lateral pain is probably bursitis/ITBS. groin pain can be a multitude of things

outside through the back of the hip socket.  it is definitely not a muscle pain feeling, nothing in the groin at all.  it's lately been this dull constant pain...

Sounds like bursitis (I have all sorts of hip issues, surgery, injections, etc), but I've recently read that sometimes what one thinks is bursitis is piraformis syndrome.

Usual PT is ice, inflams, and exercises to strengthen the glute min/med (abductors). Also can get injections which have worked for me in the past

as long as the treatment doesn't include "no training for a marathon" i am good to go!

i've done PT for many lower back issues and know exactly which exercises to get started on...that is a discipline challenge for me and always has been.

I feel your pain.....I have had a nagging rear hip pain for a year now.  It's above the butt, and between the spine and side of the hip. I feel it tighten as I run then it gets looser then after 6 miles it hurts with each step. When I walk it's fine.  I have been told it's SI joint and inflamed bursa from a massage therapist, but my chiro and PT guy says piriformis.  Not sure who to believe.  I tried yoga, and it helped but didn't get rid of the problem. Now I am doing SI joint exercises and piriformis stretches to see if that helps.  If you get your problem fixed let me know!

going through a similar issue. had some lower back pain brought on i think by some bad form on winter time weight training that i fixed through PT, then almost immediatly some pretty bad hip pain which ran down into my hamstring and top of my calf. first thing in the morning when i get up its very sore and i could not even bend enough to put my socks on with out some very intense pain in the buttock area. went to sports doctor yesterday and there is definately some weakness on my left side. he suspects i have a herniated disk and i am waiting for health insurance approval to get an MRI hopefully sometime today. as the day goes on it hurts a little less, but when i first get up from sitting there is some pin point pain in the hip area. also a dull ache at times throughout my left leg.

will update as i get more info

so the update. MRI showed herniated disc. pain had become worse since initial visit. impossible to put socks on with out help, pain sitting. general misery.
doc was great. called another doc who saw me immediately. steroid epidural yesterday, which was interesting and a little uncomfortable. but, it did work. yesterday morning i was at 10%, today i am at 75%. still some soreness but nothing like before. was told the steroid may take a couple of days to really work. go back in 2 weeks to see how its going and will start PT hopefully next week to strengthen core etc.
i am much happier today.
hope your problem is fixing itself.
