Subject: privacy in transition tent?
hi all, I am doing my first ironman at Port Macquarie......soon! There are transition tents there. my question is quite silly but I can't find he answer to my question....Is there privacy there? Meaning......how will I put on my bike shorts ( no underwear) on or in T2... How will I change into my sport skirt ( again no underwear! )This is making me lose sleep. I don't like tri suits and want to be very comfortable for the bike and run.Anyone with the experience? Thanks!!!!

There is no privacy; they are large open tents.

Unless you mean from spectators; they can't see inside.

And do people strip and change? Is is frowned upon? Could I wrap myself with a towel or something?

You can do as you like, but the only one that really cares is you.  I stripped down and changed into bike shorts then run shorts.

you can sit on the chair and change under a towel if you are squeamish.

usually it's such a nut house no one really gives a flyin' heap..

At IMNZ there wasn't even a bit of tent or cloth screen up in front of the change tents ... completely open on both ends and anybody could see in!

Nobody cared. Nobody's watching you. If it makes you feel better to wear a towel, go ahead, but believe me, everybody is so focused on their own race you could probably do the hula naked in there and no one would notice. The volunteers are so focused on doing their jobs and getting everyone in and out of there quickly with all their gear with them or back in the bag.

The spectators are so busy looking for "their" participant/s and cheering people on that they're not looking in the tent either (although most IMs they can't see in).

A lot of the European IMs don't even have separate M/F change tents.

Thanks every one for your input! so....I will just strip down and who cares! I will have my bike shorts lubricated before hand I guess.....So, I am happy I will just use my swimsuit under the wetsuit...much more comfortable.  I guess if heaps of people strip down then it's ok.  What is much more important for me is using my favourite "everything" for this day than using an uncomfortable wet tri suit.

Cheers!

Wasn't seperate M/F areas in either of the Ironman races I did (Austria and England).  No-one seemed to care, certainyl wasn't looking - too busy trying to breathe and remember where any of my kit was.

Don't lose sleep over this!  It's a madhouse and people are in their own little world.  Get comfortable for the long day.  Good luck!

Everyone is so focused on their thing that other people won't even register.

One suggestion, though..... getting out of a wet swimsuit is time consuming (at least for me, I always wrestle with mine).  Since you're in a wetsuit, you may want to wear the tri top you'll be cycling in and some tri shorts, then change into your bike shorts in the tent.  It would be a bit faster than trying to wrestle into clothing (sports bra, tri top) when you're wet.

good question though ... I was wondering this just the other day. I have to admit I hadn't thought about it being all one tent ... that's going to be interesting if that's the case.

Life is too short to worry about people seeing you naked.

A volunteer at IMCOZ actually changed me from my swim suit to my bike shorts and jersey. Everything was so chaotic, all the adrenaline, the transition from the water to dry land, etc. --- it was nice to have someone dress me!

When I did Chesapeakeman. It was just a big open tent (boys/girls).  The problem was the wind pretty much blew the sides up so it was a peek-a-poo show for anyone watching.  Face it if is bad (me) they will be sorry they looked.  If it is good they are going to admire it.

For the most part the less you worry about the faster you will change an less chance of showing off.  The guy in the pic was just  little to free and probably got a pentalty if not DQ'ed.

Looks like the Norseman Xtreme in Norway.  They don't care. Wide open changing to get in dry clothes.

Just sayin. Chances are if you're in an IM, you look good naked. No shame!

LOL! I was just thinking that at IMLP I was in the best shape of my life. I would have been happy to have people see what I had going on. If only that were still the case...stupid early season body....

(For the record, I just wore tri clothes more in the interests of simplicity than speed, so no changing for me.)
