Subject: Boulder City Council to Consider full distance Ironman in 2014

So WTC has requested to submit a proposal for a multi year contract for a full distance Ironman in Boulder. No date nailed down. They just said Summer or Fall. Swim would be at Boulder Res. Bike would be North & East of Boulder, ending at Boulder High School. The run would be along Boulder Creek path, ending downtown.

The City Council is meeting on April 30th to decide whether or not they want to consider the proposal from WTC. If they decide to allow the proposal, they would meet again sometime this Summer. City Council estimates that it would cost the city approx. $100,00. But with mutli night hotel stays & meals at restaurants, a lot of that could be made up.

I got this info straight from the agenda for the April 30th Boulder City Council meeting, on their website.

I see a few problems right off the top. First, the swim....even the Boulder 70.3 has wave starts because the Res is too small for even a 70.3 mass start with less people. The bike & run would  require some pretty major streets to be shut down. I'm not so sure the Boulder City Council would be on board with that. I mean, access is pretty limited into/out of Boulder already. For families and fans, getting to the Boulder Res is already a pain on race day. Then they have to get to Boulder High School, then get to somewhere else downtown. with all the streets closed, how is that going to work??

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have a full IM in Boulder. I told my wife that IMAZ would be my one and only full distance until the kids were older.........BUT if IM Boulder happens next year, I would HAVE TO DO the race in it's inaugural year!!! Well....if it's in the Fall. The way the last few Summers have been around here......no thanks. I grew up in TX doing 2-a-days in August, for football. If I wanted that kind of heat for an IM, I would do Louisville

Yes please!

I think there were some inklings of this when 70.3 changed their bike course to one loop for 2013.  I'm looking to do another IM in 2014 and if the timing is right, I'm in for sure.

We've all heard the news of WTC looking at more wave/time trial swim starts so that may help with the swim logistics.  I'm not that familiar with Boulder Rez but is their anyway they can creatively make one 2.4 mile loop?

I agree about timing and that would be the deciding factor for me.  90+ degree afternoons in August would be tough, especially with our July/August monsoon season.  Mid to late September would be fine by me.

Logistics would be interesting.  That being said, they have handled the Bolder Boulder every year, though obviously the IM would clog the city for an entire day.

Crossing my fingers!

I haven't heard a peep about the wave starts since it was brought up a couple months ago at a CDA meeting. I could see the swim being a 2 loop swim like CDA and Florida.

Racing Underground does a swim "race" at the Boulder Res in September. the two options are 1.2 miles & 2.4 miles. I've never done it, so I'm not sure if the 2.4 is one loop or two. I was thinking about doing the 2.4 this year as a test for IMAZ

Greetings,

I did the 2.4 mile swim in the Boulder Rez as race prep for IMAZ in 2010, yes it was two loops.

Really hope it works for 2014, and agree if the Bolder Boulder can be as successful and flawless I am confident WTC with the People's Republic of Boulder can pull it off.

Fingers and toes crossed

The Rez can accommodate a 2.4 mile swim in a single loop without much difficulty, there's a lot of unused surface area to the North and East compared to the 1.2 mile route.  Using the same run course as the HIM is a different story, 4x passing by the "sudden death" canal would be tough mentally!

Sounds like they are still "exploring:" http://www.dailycamera.com/news/boulder/ci_23143358/boulder-council-supportive-2014-usa-pro-cycling-bid

Story is about the pro cycling challenge with a small blurb about IM

COgirl, thanks for the link!! The boulder webpage says their is a "live feed" of every city council meeting. But that link never worked last night

Here's what got from the article.....reading between the lines of course. The city council hang up is the date and not shutting down the city for a day. So that's a GREAT thing. They are more worried about the date of a full IM. The first weekend in August is the Boulder 70.3. Then the Pro Cycling Challenge takes place toward the end of the month. Then there's the other IMs in the U.S. in  August/September. IM Louisville is the last weekend in august, with IM Wisconsin coming 2 weeks later, and IM Tahoe two weeks after that. Then Kona is in October, two weeks after Tahoe. WTC never has two IMs on the same weekend, in the U.S.

So I'm wondering two things about the possible date. First, would they get rid of the Boulder 70.3, and just make it a 140.6? Second, would WTC have two IMs on consecutive weekends, in the U.S, sometime in September.  My vote/hope is September. Let those afternoon temps go down a bit. The run of the 70.3 is brutal!!

Yay!  I think they should do it Labor Day weekend.  So we start summer with the Bolder Boulder and end it with an Ironman!

If they didn't care about it going through town they could just use the backroads marathon course, couldn't they?

That would make it a lot easier logistically.

Wow- so the sprint is out? I was looking forward to trying the complete series, but it just got a ton harder!

I guess there are a lot of other sprints around

So that looks like a great spacing from HIM to IM. I think I will have to volunteer in 2014 and build to IM in 2015 !!!

Anyone know much about the run course?  Is there any shade?  I'm a bit weary of an August 3rd IM in Boulder.

It is along the Boulder creek path which is fairly well shaded.

I think I am actually more excited about the 70.3 in June.  I just might do it again next year.

My next thought is how well lit is the Boulder Creek Trail at night?

It will be well shaded and running through the evening which would be the case for me should not be too bad. What does conern me is the number of people that will be on the path; a lot of back and forth.

I'm thinking of not being a crack head. It's so tempting to do it next year, but I have some unknowns right now that might not be good. I might do the 70.3 next year and volunteer at the IM to make sure I really want to do it. I was done with 70.3s last year and had no desire to do it again, but this is in our back yard. What a shame not to take advantage. It would definitely be a one and done thing for me. Bucket list type thing. I can do a marathon next year too and see how that is. I have not even done one of those yet.

It is lit but not great. What do they do at other Ironman events that are not on well lit streets? Lots of portable lights or is it up to the racers to pack a head lamp?

I just finished IMCDA on Sunday. The run portion had no permanent street lights. Ironman put up multiple portable street lights for runners and aid stations. I finished before night fall but I can imagine it was pretty well lit.

Not IMTX in '12 was really dark in a lot of places on the run. Of course I won't recommend that IM to any one, lousy venue and gross swim.

I'm in for IMBDR in '14!
