Pre-race routine:

Picked up E early from daycare, took her home to have a snack and get ready. We packed up and drove down to the parking lot at the Diamond.
Event warmup:

Walked from parking at the Diamond to the brewery - about 0.75 miles. Went to the bathroom, got a beer bracelet, lined up with the stroller runners.

Comments:

Started in the back of the pack - behind the people who were planning on walking - so it was really hard to get around them at the beginning to start running. Ran for almost the whole first mile. My legs and hips were really sore, so we had to do some walking. Ended up doing even more walking in the second and third miles. E started fussing around mile 2, so we took a small break to get her some water and toys. We wove around and chased each other for about a half a mile around mile 2.5 It was fun. E was giggling a ton.

Traffic was not happy about the runners blocking off the streets. Obviously not our fault, but I think there are going to be lots of complaints about this event in the future. :(
What would you do differently?:

Not much. It's hard to predict how things will go when you have a little one.
Post race
Warm down:

Went to the porta potty, changed E's diaper, walked around. Realized the beer and food lines were way too long to manage with E, so we walked back to the car. E had a snack at the car, then we drove home and made a pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sore legs, running with a toddler

Event comments:

Fun local race! Heard it described as a "four mile cover charge" and that's definitely true.

Things I forgot to mention originally:

1. I had Elmo's World songs stuck in my head.  Damnable little red monster.

2. I wore wool knee socks with my knickers.  It was too warm!

3. E ate all but 1 of the pack of Honey Stinger pomegranate chews I had for after the race.  I'm amazed she liked them! She kept asking for more.

Nice work, sounds like you had a ton of fun, Jen!  I smiled at E giggling--nothing like a little kid giggle Laughing.  Sorry you had to miss out on the beer though.

So fun. My favorite races are the ones I have done with my kids. It sounds like you and E had a great time. Sorry you missed the beer, but homemade pizza sounds good.

4 mile cover charge, sounds like a great party Wink

E likes honey stinger chews.....too cute, start her off early on the sports nutrition, she may embrace endurance sports.

Sounds like a great race, even if you had to miss the beer Frown. So cool that you can enjoy your running and share it with E. It'll be a great example of fitness and time with Mommy for her. Nice job!

jmkizer - 2013-04-26 5:56 PM Was this E's first race experience?

No. We all did the Wicked 10k in October.  I think this is her 2nd one.

Sounds like fun - but no fun that the beer lines were too long. ;(
