"The Ironman-sanctioned race would start with a 2.4-mile swim in the intracoastal waterway, a 112-mile bike ride on Highway 31 and then a full marathon that would start at Marina Inn at Grande Dunes and end at the Market Common.

The city put in a bid for a 5-year contract starting fall of 2014."

Interesting news...wondering when they would fit this in.   I am thinking early Sept before IM Whisky  I can't imagine in Oct. as the pros are coming off Kona and IMFL in early Nov and IM AZ late Nov.

Hilton Head is also in the running. Looks like they specifically are looking to add a fall race in the SE

Hilton Head was one of many communities solicited by Ironman to apply to host an annual southeast regional race in fall 2014. The selected site will be offered a five-year agreement to host the race.

I will be watching this closely as I am considering 2014 for an Ironman, and either of these towns would be a great place to race. I wonder how long it takes them to decide and make an announcement

Why not in early spring, April? Myrtle Beach would still be chilly in April but Hilton Head would definitely be warm enough. (and still wetsuit legal)

I think between the 2, Myrtle Beach would be better able to handle an event of this size.

More info here

http://www.thestate.com/2013/04/24/2739645/myrtle-beach-considering...

The city is working with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and a local businessman to place a bid with the Ironman Triathlon to bring the event to Myrtle Beach in September 2014.

Berglund said Ironman is looking to hold a triathlon in the fall somewhere from Alabama to Virginia. He said the organization aims to make a decision by the beginning of July.

As much as I would love to be done with 140.6 to focus on 70.3, this would get me out there again!

They are also considering one in Asheville, Boulder, and San Luis Obispo.  I read somewhere that the Obispo one appears dead, the Boulder one is being studied by the city council, and they are looking at adding one race in either Ashville, Myrtle Beach, or Hilton Head.

I'm all for more races!

I wonder at what point it gets easier to registrar for one!

If any of those happen, I'm scrapping my plans for IMTX and racing there!

I think the beach IMs would probably be a safer bet just b/c Asheville would be a hilly to mountainous IM...IMO, it'd be TOUGH.

I'd also prefer Myrtle Beach...Hilton Head is a beautiful SMALLER beach town and I don't think it could handle an IM with the same ease as MB. If I were a wagerin' man, I'd bet on MB to win this one.

BTW, there is some talk circulating that Augusta might be in the running? I can't see it being a good IM locale...70.3 suits it, though.

Another IM race in the SE would probably hurt Louisville and B2B.  It might make it easier to get into IMFL though.  I wonder if they are planning on getting rid of Louisville.

Louisville just signed another 5 year contract last year (or year before) so it would be a few years of overlap before it went away. My folks live in the metro Louisville area and while there are a segment of people out in Oldham County that would like to see the race go away, the local merchants make more money on IM day than any other day of the year. I doubt it's going anywhere.

This is IM seeing every race sell out in record time and wanting to make more $$$.

I am really hoping for Hilton Head since its less than 2 hours from me, but I am being realistic, it is a very small beach town. The island itself could not accommodate that many people, a large number of people who have to hang out in Bluffton. Myrtle Beach could accommodate the large amount of people.

I'm hoping it's Asheville because i love it there, even though that would be a harder race. Although, I'm not gonna be ready for am IM until the end of 2015 or beginning 2016.

The Boulder Ironman appears to be happening.  It cleared the city council last night.  It sounds like it will be the first weekend in August 2014.

I found this on Slowtwitch.  ST is slowtwitch and AM is the CEO of Ironman's parent company.

ST: Is there going to be an Ironman Asheville? It’s a great location for an Ironman, but the course, the swim venue, presents challenges.

AM: We’re still going through the process. We expect to have a late season race in the Southeastern U.S., which means Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina.
 http://www.slowtwitch.com/Interview/Messick_on_Boulder_etc._3706.html

Looks good for another race in the Southeast.  I haven't heard anything about a race in Tennessee.  Hmmmm.

Nah... I've spent the last week here doing some running, riding and swimming (and breaking bones, but that's besides the point) The island could easily accommodate an IM and all of the folks associated with it. People would only have to stay off island if they chose to. Especially in October.

The rumor is that HH is the front runner.  Total rumor though so don't get too excited.

I keep thinking that Myrtle Beach will buy it for the tourism dollars.

Now that they officially announced Boulder last week (http://www.ironman.com/press-releases/2013/06/ironman-boulder-announced-1.aspx#axzz2XRkRL7iS) I wonder how long until we find out about a decision on the new race in the southeast.

This is awesome news. It would cheapen the logistics of getting to one for sure. That is what sucks about only having IMFL and IMLOU to choose from. Everything else is a huge trek or takes airfare so I am all for it.
