Subject: My 38th birthday gift to myself... first sprint tri!

I just registered for my first sprint triathlon in June but have been "officially" training since January. I am logging my workouts on Garmin Connect and Mapmyfitness but I may try to do it on BT, looks like a good place too!

I have been running since 2009 and was ready for a new challenge. I have a friend whose lifelong dream was to do the Ironman in Kona, he did it last October and I followed his journey. What an inspiration!

My goal for this year is to do 2 sprint tris (1 in June, 1 in August or Sept) with 5-10k races and a few bike events in-between.

I have been a lurker on this site for many months and already got so much useful info... You triathletes are a great bunch... Newcomers certainly feel welcome here!

Sounds like me 3 years ago, when I completed my first sprint triathlon.  You will find a lot of solid advice and a great community on BT.  I've kept my training log on here since I started.  I know that there are other sites with features that are more advanced, but I still like this log the best.  Good luck on your tri and enjoy!

I did my first tri just 3 months shy of turning 60.  An amazing birthday present to myself.  I learned that it is Ok (even good!) to step outside of one's comfort zone and that I have talents/skills I have told myself for many years that I do not have.  There are no limits...

Thank you all for the replies. I am definitely enjoying training and I am seeing progress, especially in the swim and run. I have looked at the finish times from last year's edition (bad idea) and saw that there are very few beginners at this sprint event (they also have a mini-sprint event, all beginners seem to "begin" there!)

Is it a bad idea to "modify" a training plan as we progress? The plan I have seemed good originally but now I doubt it. Week 8 out of 12 and it only has me training for 3 - 3.5 hours a week. Since I want to finish around 1:30 ish I have been adding to it so I train for 4-4.5 hours. We'll see how this goes.

So a bit worried but up to the challenge nonetheless! I just want to enjoy it

I did a sprint tri at 38 as well! Looking to do the same race again this year . . . 6 years later. Hoping to make the same time, maybe shave 45 seconds off. Not as fast as I was then, but a little smarter LOL. Good luck!
