I really have a tough time staying in the aero position.  I'm actually faster over the same course on my older giant defy than my felt.  I think because I'm constantly in and out of my aero bars.  I'd hate to sell my bike.  Anyone had any success converting their tri bike to an "aero road" bike?

Curious how one would do this. Do you mean alter the front so that one could get into a standard road position as well as aero? Wondering as I can't ride a tri bike here due to hellish traffic, but usually race in more civilized conditions where I could, and I have one training area where I could. If I could somehow ride a tri bike like a road bike to/from a safer training venue, and remove the "road" component for races as needed, that would be cool.

I did.  I was in a similar predicament, I bought a used Trek Equinox Tri Bike for like $300 on craigslist, so it wasn't like I bastardizing an expensive bike.  Picked up some new shifters and a bar, and had it swapped at the LBS.  I ended up adding the aerobars back on, but for 95% of my riding (which is not in a race), the road bars are preferable.

Eventually, I'll get dedicated road and tri bikes.

Do you have a picture of how this works? Do you basically just have an entirely different cockpit for "road" and then switch it out to race? Are the aerobars the ones that come with the tri bike, or the "clip-on" kind you add to a road bike?  And is there any problem with having a road position on a tri bike for extended periods of time? I know the frame geometry's a but different. Sorry--I'm kind of a bike idiot and can't visualize the setup.

Yeah, I'm wondering if it would be that different than say a Venge, or a S5?

I thought about doing this since I was building up a new roadie and found a few tri frames very inexpensive. The consensus was that the bars would be VERY low and make it uncomfortable on long rides like centuries.
If you measure the difference from the ground to the stem cap on a road vs tri bike there is a pretty big difference in geometry.

Have you had a "pro" fit? Sounds like it should be adjusted for more comfort then just the "most" aero position.

Chrissie did it specifically for the Alpe D'Huez tri.  Not saying you should or shouldn't, but it can certainly be done.

ETA - if you are not comfortable in the aero position you may want to get refit.  I don't like being aero on the trainer, but have no issues on the road.  It does take some time to adjust if you're new to the position, but the bike is designed to be ridden in an aero position.

This was my first thought as well.  What is it specifically that you find so uncomfortable?

To answer your question, I've never seen anyone switch out a tri bike base bar for road bars, but my old bike came with road bars and aero bars, so it's not that uncommon to see.  Here's what mine looked like:

I feel like I'm crammed down too much.  I don't feel like I'm terribly efficient,  and my neck is killing me after a couple of miles.  Maybe a refit would help, at 42 I'm not as flexible as I was.  I also feel much more stable on the road bars.

How many rides, or miles have you put into the new bike - in the aero position?  Were you originally fitted when you got the bike?

I moved from a road to Tri bke last season, and had a fitting done before getting out on the road.  In the first 2 minutes of being in aero, all I thought was  - OMG, I've made a huge mistake with the fitting.  It was so "aggressive" compared to how my road bike with clip on's felt.  BUt I just needed to adapt, I put my faith in the fit, and gave it an honest chance.  Yes my neck hurt, and yea I felt crammed, but body did acclimate to the position.  I was just so used to riding a slack position, that the Tri geometry plus a more aggressive fit felt very strange and uncomfortable.  But I ended up being very happy with the fit and feel, and at the end of the season I actually dropped the position a bit lower.

I wasn't comfortable on my new tri bike till I finally broke down and paid ($150) fro a F.I.S.T. (tri bike specific). It made a world of difference, much more comfortable. I would strongly suggest a fist fitter. They will take your fitness into consideration for the fit. Good luck

Friend of mine that races did, it was more comfortable for her than aero bars.

Hmmm.....If I could get my hands on a second-hand tri bike (people sometimes sell them here) that fit, I could see this being something workable for my situation here! (And I want Chrissie's bike--we're the same size and hasn't she retired anyway?)

Sure, here's a quick pick (before I added the aero bars back on).

It's not ideal by any stretch of the imagination, but it fits me pretty good and is comfortable on long rides.  I didn't want to spend a bunch of money at the onset of a sport I wasn't sure I would like, but it works for me (for now).  A new, proper bike is on my list of things to buy this winter.

Here it is as I bought it:

I've actually just started doing this with an old 2001 P2K frame that I bought on here last year. The frame is currently out getting a shiny, new powder coat paint job, but I expect to have it fully built and rolling by the end of May.
