I want to volunteer at this race so I can sign up for 2015. My question is about reserving a hotel room. Do the hotels fill up as fast as the race and do I need to make my reservation this coming July,  a year in advance to make sure I get a room? Any Suggestions on the nicest cheapest place to stay?

I found a lot of hotels that had rooms this February for this year's race weekend, but most had multi-day requirements and prices that were above what I really wanted to pay.  Three to four day minimum and $200+ a night.  There may have been some cheaper/less restrictive available but I ended up giving up and deciding to camp for my volunteer year at one of the state parks in the area.  When I go in '14 I will probably just suck it up and get something near the action.

That doesn't really answer your question, but if camping is an option its a lot cheaper.

Yep, the hotel rooms fill up about as quickly as the race.  When I signed up for 2012 (in 2011), I made my hotel reservation the very same day and several places were already booked.

I have heard that you can get rooms in January, February, March....as people cancel; however, I was not willing to take that chance.

I stayed at a place called Town & Country Motor Inn (a referral that I got from BT).  We rented the apartment there and paid $250 per night (5 night minimum, I believe).  It had a bedroom, living room and full kitchen along with a separate, private entrance.  We were very happy there and I would definitely stay there again.

This place is within walking distance to Main Street (about 1 mile from the Oval); so close enough to walk, but off the beaten path of all the commotion.

I also had a referral to Art Devlins Motor Inn and tried to reserve there (they are a bit closer), but they were already booked.  They did offer to put me on a waiting list though.

Good luck to you!  Lake Placid is amazing .

Thanks for the info marathongirl. I'm going to contact several places and see how soon they will take reservations. Don't want to wait for cancellations either as it seems too risky.
