REVOLUTION3 Triathlon
54F / 12C
Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 42m 48s
Overall Rank = 110/355
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 16/40
Pre-race routine:

There wasn't much of a routine today, just getting checked in and set up.
Event warmup:

Woke up at 5:35 and got packed. I ate a banana when I woke up, and a Powerbar later. Nate and I then went and set up bike transition, ran a warm-up mile, stood around in the freezing cold, and then jumped in the water.
Swim
  • 26m 51s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

I did not like the start of this swim! Between the freezing temperature and no chance for a practice swim (once you get in, you can't really get back out) the beginning of the swim was terrible. I was a little panicky, couldn't catch my breath, kept hitting people...it was not good. However, once I turned into the current at the turnaround buoy, everything really changed. My breathing calmed, my heart rate got to normal, and then it was just like a pool swim. It was really day and night. I felt pretty great for the second 2/3 of the swim, that start just threw me. I'm really happy with my sub-2:00/100 time.
What would you do differently?:

There isn't much I could've done differently. You couldn't practice swim bc of the water temperature and the lack of ability to get back out, so I'm glad I was able to fight through a rough start to have a good overall swim.
Transition 1
  • 05m 33s
Comments:

It's about 1/3 of a mile run from the swim to T1, so that it wasn't as long and bad as the time makes it seem. I ran well, and really only had trouble with numb hands and realizing that I couldn't get my long sleeve shirt on since I was wet. I ended up just leaving it.
What would you do differently?:

Try on clothes while wet.
Bike
  • 1h 19m 13s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.82 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a miserable bike, even though I liked the course and was happy with how I did. The course was rolling hills, with some downhills that could be nice...if it hadn't been pouring rain. Also, I was freezing the whole way; I just couldn't stop shivering. It's nothing to do with the race, just the miserable conditions.
What would you do differently?:

I had zero experience biking in the rain, so I didn't really know how to prepare. If I bike again in similar conditions, I'll definitely have some long sleeves to keep the cold out.
Transition 2
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

It was a pretty good transition, and I was so happy to be off that bike and out of the rain for a couple minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 48m 46s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a really good run: I felt strong and could've kept that pace for awhile longer if I'd needed. I had a couple little cramps under my ribs, which I was worried about, but I focused on my breathing and they went away after a little while.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I pushed hard enough that I had plenty during the last half-mile to pass 4 people that were in front of me.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a bbq sandwich and walked around for just a bit. Then I was ready to get out of the rain for the day!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

THE RAIN!!! But I'm happy with my performance.

Event comments:

Rev3 couldn't help the weather, and I'm glad they didn't adjust the event. It was well-planned, had plenty of aid stations and volunteers, and they really tried their best to have a great race in pretty terrible conditions.

Outstanding job in really nasty conditions. Way to tough it out and lay down a nice time.

Like Randy says, way to stick to your race plan and execute a really nice race in really terrible conditions. I am impressed.

You and Nate are a formidable 1-2 punch out there.

Well done!  Nice recovery on the swim.  Good to know that recovery is possible after a crummy start...

Jamie - didn't realize you were there or I would have looked for you.  That was quite a trip, wasn't it?  Can you believe we actually paid money for that experience... lol!  Ah well, it will make for good stories one day... not quite yet though!  Congrats... that's a fine time for the conditions and course.  Well done!

Yeah, I like to remind myself that we all not only volunteered to go through all that, but we paid for it! I was most impressed by one older lady who was so cold she had to get someone to help her put her socks and bike shoes on, but you could tell that it hadn't occurred to her to quit!
