I like this one. Minimal riding on the road with cars. Not a lot of climbing, though. Add in some Newport Coast Drive if you want more elevation.

Tons. Quail Hill trailhead - the start for the road ride I posted - is a good place to start an MTB ride as well. Serrano Ridge to Bommer Road and across the 73 toll road into Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and El Morro. On the other side of Irvine is Irvine Regional and Santiago Oaks. Oaks is a pretty good MTB playground. And for race training, the Over The Hump MTB race series starts next Tuesday at Irvine Lake. Fun and casual, but usually brings out a few pros as well. For a nice grind of a climb, Blackstar Canyon Road works. We're pretty blessed here in OC. Look at geoladders.com for routes, or, of course, Strava. The local bike shops carry a couple of books on biking in OC.

Sweet, I am also looking for a proper bike shop, not a boutique type place but something with character and Tri to MTB.

I'm partial to The Path in Tustin (and their new store on Live Oak Canyon, which is closer to me but doesn't have quite as big a selection). Giant, Kona, Scott, Cannondale, Santa Cruz, Niner, Intense... Plus all the parts you could possibly need or want. Good service dept. and people with knowledge about all kinds of biking. Fullerton Bikes is a nice shop, too, but farther from Irvine. Have also heard good things about Pro Bike Supply in Newport, but haven't been there. That one may have a better selection of Tri stuff.

Also check out OC Bike Garage in Lake Forest - they do good work, plus have rental work areas with all the specialty tools available.

Whiting Ranch in Lake Forest, Peters Canyon in Orange and Woods Canyon in Aliso Viejo all have decent well marked trails and varying terrain.
