After a long search for used race wheels for my roadie (campy record components) I started wondering where is the love for campy. Nearly everything I seem to come across is either shimano or sram compatible but love for campy. Can anyone explain why so few people use campy stuff?

Price perhaps?  At least my impression is that campy is more expensive.  But maybe that's changed?

I still have my old road bike w/ Campy components from the early 80's.  I never ride it anymore, though.

for road bike shifting- I didn't like the position of the release mechanism.  I needed to move my hand off the hood and reach with my thumb.  just doesn't work for me.

other than that- it's all good stuff.  they did go 11-speed before shimano and SRAM.  that's a plus.

Price point has always been the limiter for non-campyphiles... A friend just got EPS installed on his bike, and it's glorious. Possibly even better than Di2, and I thought it was pretty awesome.

I still lust over an old steel Colnago with Record components.

So then is price literally the only reason you never see campy components on bikes when you go shopping for a new bike? If I had to guess it seems that less than probably 1-2% of riders have campy and I have NEVER seen campy on a bike at any bike shop I have ever been to.

I have Campy Eurus wheels on my Tri bike, the rear hub spins for ever. Such nice wheels.

Campagnolo components are the pinnacle of bike grouppos. At any given time, in aNy given decade.
Campy is the chosen group set for most TdF riders.
The first company to use ceramic parts. The first company to go to 11. (These gears go to eleven)
Limited manufacture lots.
100 years of technology at work.
Yet I still ride Shimano.

I quit Campy in the 1985 Florida State USCF Masters Road Race when my Campy rear derailer locked up leaving me with front derailer shifting only for the rest of the hilly State Championship.  I have been with Dura Ace ever since. No love for Campy here.

We have Campy on 8 of our 9 bikes. When I started racing as a kid, Campy was so far ahead that was really the only choice. It has stuck with me ever since.

In my experience, Campy has a very distinct tactile and exact feeling in the shifting. Shimano to me has always felt too soft and plastic... SRAM is nice, but I don't like the double tap.

Used prices for Campy are higher than for Shimano.

I think part of the problem is that they don't really have a group that can go on a $1000-2000 bike.  If you could spec it on an entry level bike people would find out how awesome it is.  I would personally consider running campy (on a road bike, not on a TT bike) if I didn't already have Shimano freehubs on all my wheels.  And those wheels have, for the most part, been hanging around on bikes since my first one, a Giant I bought for $1100.

There is still a lot of love for Campy amongst cyclists, it's just hard to find mainstream bikes that are spec'd with Campy these days.  Shimano and SRAM is just plain cheaper.

I still ride my 20 year old lugged steel Libertas with Campy Athena/Chorus, and it rides like a champ. I always liked the thumb shifters better than the Shimano STI levers too.  I hated having to move the entire brake lever to shift.

If my Cervelo tri bike came spec'd with Campy, I'd be in heaven.

I have campy on my entry-level Javelin. I love it, but my bike shop doesn't keep any parts in stock. Doesn't take long to order parts, though.

I think what most people do not understand are you paying for what you get. With Shimano something breaks you are buying a new part there are very few replacement pieces out there, SRAM there are some rebuild kits, Campy you can completely tear down and rebuild pretty much everything.  QBP stocks almost every Campy part so getting something is no longer an issue. Any bike shop in America can make one phone call and have something within a week. I have Chorus and EPS Record on my road bikes and might be changing over to EPS 11 on my TT for next year (there are rumors floating out there about some new stuff Cough Cough 12 speed).

@ Sprint_Da you can get some bikes with lower end Campy parts Veloce, Centaur occasionally you will see one with Athena. Trek also has that option however it is not widely publicized.  I only know the Trek thing because my neighbor works there.

To me price is not an issue. They are about the same as long as the buyer is willing to do some research.

Veloce 10v, the lowest Campy group that is the same level as 105 10sp can be had in the neighborhood of $600-$700. Almost the same price.

Athena 11v, closest to Ultegra, also costs about the same as the latter and has the "advantage" of 11 cogs.

Campy Chorus 11v costs about $1500-$1700. More than Ultegra 10sp but less than Dura Ace 11sp for similar performance.

I think the issue is that Campy never pursued the OEM market with as much vigor as the big S and SRAM. Of course, smaller OEM pentration = less parts availability.

They are happy with their (much much smaller) market share, and with the typical Campy DGAF attitude, they will just continue to do what they want to do.

So would campy components have to be an add on after you purchase a new bike if I wanted campy or would I be able to get it straight from the factory/LBS? I'm doing research for my first tri bike purchase and I love the record 10 that came on my used roadie but just haven't ever seen it on any tri bikes.

So when everything is said and done is campy worth it in the long haul if you have to special order it and pay even more for an already expensive tri bike?

You do see it on some. Pinarello. Colnago and Bianchi (hmm all Italian...)  All have offerings with Campy. Also the 2013 Trek Speed Concept 9 team edition comes with Campy SR-11.

No.

Don't get me wrong, I love Campy stuff, but it's so hard to find without special ordering that if you travel anywhere to race/ride and need a replacement part, you could be screwed.  Shimano/SRAM are basically interchangeable and all levels basically work together, so if you're in a town w/ one bike shop and your rear derailer breaks and it was a Shimano Ultegra, you could pop on a Tiagra at the store where you're at and away you go.  You'd be fine until you got home.  \

Even locally, Campy is just too much of a rare bird to me....odds are when you find it at a shop, the selection sucks and it's way overpriced.  Good gear but not worth the headache.

That's what I was going to say, if you all were buying Italian bikes you would see more campy.  Still love my 80's steel full campy, even though I've switched over to DI2.
