Subject: Take your bike in the mini-mart?

I was on a long ride by myself and needed to refill my water bottles about 1/2 way.  I stopped at a gas station mini-mart to buy some water and get some ice but it took me forever to work up the courage to leave my bike outside.  It's new and expensive and it completely freaked me out to leave it propped up on the front of the store, so I basically waited until the few people getting gas left.

It felt like I was leaving my child unattended to play on the freeway.

Just the other day I saw a blog post by another triathlete who took her bike into a Target, so my question is this:

Do you take your bike in the store or???

BTW - I've never seen another cyclist/triathlete carry a chain and lock on rides.  And, thankfully, I live in a relatively low-crime area, but it's my BIKE for Heaven's sake!

If they have windows that I can see my bike from at all times, I leave it outside. I've also taken it inside. I carry it and try to be polite about it and not bump it into anything. I've never been asked to leave, but I would if they asked me.

If I know that I'm going to stop somewhere or if I'm deliberately taking my bike to run errands I'll bring my lock and lock it up outside. If, however, I'm just out for a training ride and need to make a stop I will, and have, bring my bike in with me. It would be just my luck that the one time I left my bike unattended and unlocked it would disappear.

Small town.  I leave it.  Not that it's perfect here.  I wouldn't leave it for long periods.

I'd probably take it. I live in a low-crime, small town too but I'm not leaving $2k sitting on the sidewalk. Just can't do it.

On a ride it sits outside mainly because I'm either riding with friends or stopping at one of my usual stops where I can see my bike from inside.  However, when I have to stop off somewhere like Walgreens or something (had to do this once to buy a replacement battery for my rear light on commute home) it goes in with me, every single time.

I ALWAYS bring mine in.  Never had a problem with store personnel.  Most of the clerks know me anyway by now and we chat it up a bit (at 3 different places).

PS:  Plus how can I PR my strava segments if I'm carrying the added weight of a lock???

If you do leave it outside put it in the big ring and the smallest cog. It should buy you some time if someone decides they want to ride off with it.

Theft risk really drops for the hard care cyclists when their bikes are dripping with sweat and urine!

Hmm, I've never really considered it getting stolen while I was inside.

I'll still leave it outside though... If I'm on a ride I'm not going to be inside a store for more than 2-3 minutes tops. Acceptable risk

I have never carried a lock with my bike. My baby will never be held in chains! I have, however, carried it up escalators, and brought it into stores of all kinds. Very rarely does someone say anything. Usually I get asked questions about the bike or how far did I ride.

I have asked fellow cyclists (strangers) to watch my bike while I went to fill bottles or use the bathroom. I assume if they have a bike of equal or greater value I'm safe. Happens a lot here in and around the city. Otherwise, bikes disappear fast.

I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving mine unlocked outside.

I've taken my bike in a store a couple of times to buy some water/gatorade.  I just try not to be a bother or get in anyone's way with it.  Nobody's ever complained about it, but one clerk did call me "Lance".

I had this dilemma the other day on a ride.  I knew I was running out of water and really wanted more.  I pondered bringing it in and setting it out of the way just inside the door.  I pondered leaving it just outside the door.  I pondered stashing it in the back someplace where it would be less obvious.  I ended up deciding to push home rather than risk leaving my bike unattended.  I ran dry with about 4 miles to go so it was a calculated risk that seemed to outweigh leaving my bike outside.  Glad to see I wouldn't be the only "crazy" one to take my bike in with me if I am in that situation in the future.

My rides are really in the boonies so I never have to go into an uber busy store.  But on the few times I have I bring the bike in and leave it in an unobtrusive place near the register.  The clerks know an expensive bike when they see it and as many have stolen one had one stolen from them they understand why I am bringing it in the store.

I always have my cable lock on the bike, it coils up small and is attached to a bracket on my aerobars, the only time I take it off is when going to a race. If it got nicked I just couldn't afford to replace it so for me it's better safe then sorry.

I usually leave it outside depending on the logistics of the store (windows, line at the checkout counter, etc)

This is funny because I work in a bank and one of my customers always comes in with his bike and when he's in my office he leans it against the plate glass window that is inside my office and positions his chair so he can always see his bike and talk to me.  For goodness sake, his bike is inside an office,  inside a professional office building, with about 15 bank employees between his bike and the nearest exit.  I don't want to become that guy.

I ride in rural farm lands and have never thought twice about leaving my bike propped up outside a gas station. There is a gas station on the IMWI course that does not allow bike shoes with cleats inside...

^^ Julio wins the thread.

I've done both; play it by ear depending on the situation.  I have never had a store owner be upset that I set the bike inside, but obviously it's done curteously and not getting in anyone's way.

No cleats? A lot of the gas stations I frequent in my rural long rides in NE Kansas are just happy you have shoes!

Wow, I wish I lived where some of you all do!!!

One of my Circle K stops is 2 blocks from Meth head central.  No way I'm leaving anything out there, much less my bike.  I'm just glad they're pretty neighborly at the station and don't mind me trucking in my bike.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to stands outside swaying from foot to foot over the indecisiveness of it all!

Thanks for the replies!

I'll be taking my bike inside next time, courteously, of course!
