Subject: Do you sit or stand in transitions?

I'm going to be doing my first tri on Sunday. I was wondering if anyone uses a bucket or a camp stool or something like that on your transitions? Or do you stand? I am planning not to use socks for the bike or run.

Thanks.

I've never sat down.  Mostly becuase it takes too much time and I'm worried I'll get too comfortable nad not want to get back up   I go sockless on the bike, so that by the time I get ot T2 my feet are dry adn it's easier to put socks on for the run.

That's a great quote! I'm going to have to remember it for the weekend.

Stand. The only time I'd sit is if there are wetsuit "strippers".

If I have an end spot on the rack I'll put my milk crate there. I put some stuff on top some inside then sit quick in T2 to get my socks on. No socks on the bike either. If I don't get an end spot I forego the crate. Then I just fall down trying to get my socks on.

I have a little square ice chest (filled with a couple rehydrating beers?) that I sat on for T1. I also put baby powder in my socks before the race so I guess the excuse of sitting to put socks on wet feet is out.

Oh well, gotta have someplace to keep the beers -- and I found an end-rack spot last time so....

Hey Sharon,

Be sure to look for me or Gina (grvfrog) at the race on Sunday.  We can help you get your transition area set up!

I stand and manage to put on socks without sitting. I don't towel off the feet first, just make sure to open them wide. It helps to use a thin synthetic fabric sock

If you wear socks on the bike or run, before your race, do the following:

Take your socks and put them on your feet. From the top, roll them down your feet. Imagine like reverse rolling a condom. Leave enough space for your toes to fit int the end and when you are ready to put them on, just roll them up your feet. If you feet are wet or dry, your socks will just roll right up.

I'm sorry, but I'm too busy to think about that during a tri

Looking forward to meeting you and Gina this Sunday. I am just trying to decide if I want to bring a bucket to sit on. I just don't want to look stupid walking into the transition area with my bike and a bucket instead of a transition bag.

Now if you were to walk up with the bucket on your head, that would look pretty dumb!  If you get there early enough (and if they don't have assigned transition spots) you can get a spot on the end and just set up your bucket on the end of the rack out of the way of everybody.

I have a hand towel with my stuff so I can wipe off my feet and dry them...standing up.

I try not to sit down if at all possible.

That would be a good way to identify yourself to us BT'ers!

On second thought, I think we might act as if we don't know you!  Wink

My first tri about a month ago I just stood on a towel and slipped on my bike shoes, no socks.  This time I will have the shoes allready clipped in and basically grab glasses and shot blocks then helmet then off, slip bike shoes on while riding.  If you want some details on how I do the shoe clipped in thing, let me know.  Not that hard really, just takes a bit of practice.

I know many people do it but the bucket or baby pool thing looks silly to me.

Plan on blisters.  Bring sandles for post walking.

That and put some foot powder in them.  i use different socks for the run and bike.  I'm weird that way.   I hate running in wet shoes.

use the heel-toe method...  keep either one of them on the ground at some point while putting socks on.  It helps me in balance.  Pick up y our toes, roll the sock on, then pick up the heel and finish rolling it up.

Short answer is I stand but not for long.

Best reply to this is some stuff over on ST. De Soto and others were suggesting to strip the wet suit before the transition area and run with it in your arms to the bike. Faster through transition and faster to get the suit off the closer you are to the water. The little water inside the suit as you come out of the swim helps getting the suit off.

Since I use to pull my top down running anyway wit ha QR and now pull my T1 top totally off on the transition run I'll now be stopping and pulling the entire suit off ASAP. Makes sense to me. But my T1 wet suit is really easy to get off (T1 is generally well under a minute flat) and worth the effort for the freedom running and a lower HR to the bike if the transition is long...and most are locally.

I admit I was one of the silly looking people with the bucket... It worked great for me... especially since I have not upgraded my bike shoes to velcro (they are laced). I also have terrible balance from an old back injury so bending over for tying shoes would likely result in me toppling over anyway.

My husband takes great joy in catching me squatting to do things (like gardening, or washing the floor). He generally topples me over with one finger to the forehead.

I used the rolled socks trick last weekend in a practice T1/T2. I kept them in a ziplock bag with baby powder and gavce it another good shake as I set up the TA. I'm going to add in Christine's heel/toe tip when I run through my setup tonight.

See you Sunday Christine!!
