Cutting Edge Triathlon

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 38m 47s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Wake up at 4:45am. Eat a banana and drive the 1hr to the race site.
Event warmup:

Set up transition, stretch, consume a Gu.
Swim
  • 17m 29s
  • 400 meters
  • 04m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

First 200m was pretty good, stayed in the top 1/3 of the main pack. It all went to hell around the 200m buoy. I got kicked in the chest by someone who was panicking who then grabbed me and used me as a floatation device. I swallowed a nice bit or water and ended up being pulled up onto a boat to get my breath and bearings. I lost over 9 minutes on the boat before the rescue divers would let me re-enter the water. Even after all that I still wasn't the last person out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Stay out a little wider and not hug the buoy line to avoid panicking people.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Took a little extra time in T1 due to the circumstances of the swim. Tried to calm myself down before heading out on the bike. Washed all the sand/dirt off my feet, put on sock, put on cycling shoes, and ran out the bike exit.
What would you do differently?:

Decent considering the circumstances.
Bike
  • 43m 58s
  • 13 miles
  • 17.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Still trying to get used to the tri bike. One thing is for certain, I need to change out the crank. I can't get used to the compact crank to save my life. After the swim I knew I needed to make up some time and I did. I once again left too much in the tank on the run. On a positive note, the new Profile Design Aero HC system is awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Push it a little more, I should be well over 18mph pace.
Transition 2
  • 00m 8s
Comments:

Overall pretty good transition for me. Cycling shoes off, running shoes on. Swig of Gatorade and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 33m 11s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 05m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

First run in my Kinvara's. Just got them yesterday and didn't have time to run in them before hand. Shoes felt real good. I will I would have wore my calf sleeves. I've had a nagging pain in both calf's when I run lately. Took a little time to find my running legs... didn't find them till after the 1/2 way point. I'll attribute that to my lack of brick workouts. Once again I feel like I left too much in the tank, I felt too good at the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Push it a little more.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, 2 slices of pizza, some walking.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The events that happened during the swim, holding back too much on the bike and run.

Event comments:

Good event.

Most people believe that running barefoot is dangerous. Certainly, depending upon the surface, they would be correct. However, there is some suggestion that running barefoot may reduce injuries.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
