Just tried out my NEW 910XT ($299-$50 rebate!!). After downloading on Connect and Training Center, I see that after the first 100m, it classified my stroke as mixed (combo of free & back)??

Advice??

It happens. It seems that fast freestyle is sometimes picked up as back stroke. It's an instrument, it's not perfect. You can edit your workout in Garmin software if you really need to.

Did it work okay after that? I find the stroke recognition is amazingly accurate when I'm doing a conventional stroke for the full length. But, for instance, at the start of my warmup set I usually do a little bit of balance for, say, the first 10 yards, and then shift to free. At the end of that set it will usually show back for the first length and then free for the subsequent lengths. But if you're saying you started right off the wall in free then that is strange. I'd definitely give it a few more tries before panicking

I flat love my 910xt but it's not infallible on swimming. Mainly it gets very confused on drills and often will record that I stayed on the wall for extended periods. Various balance drills, kicking, one arm drills, and the like confuse it and the main result it is the final yardage amounts don't include all my yardage for that session. I don't find it that big of a deal. The thing's pretty doggone cool but it's not magic.

Oh, and if your OWS is anything like mine be prepared to be absolutely distressed when you see how much farther you swim than you should. I did about 1750 meters in a 1500 course yesterday. The 910xt will show you in exquisitely painful detail every spot where you go off course. Argh.

Swimming lessons?...Just kidding.

Seriously, though, I've had mine since January, and haven't had it mislabel a single stroke that I can tell - free, back, breast, or fly. I've been amazed at it's accuracy.

My suggestion is to stick with it, and keep working on your swimming, because even though my first comment was in jest, I do believe that the better your stroke is technically, the more accurate it will be.

I had an issue one time with my 910xt recognizing my stroke and many times with counting laps incorrectly during the first month. It was due to poor technique, once I improved my stroke, everything works fine. So I guess it was on me.

Well, about 2 weeks w/the 910xt. Still having the unit recognize the majority of my swim as b/s. Guess it's not a HUGE deal, BUT for a tech weenie, it's irritating the HECK out of me. Most of my swimming is Masters; gotta think the coaches would point out if my stroke was that horrendous. Per the advice on DC, I make sure to have a good push off.

I had the swim sense for awhile that would read my breaststroke as rest, and miscount some free 25s every once in awhile. It was annoying enough that I returned it.

I got my 910 at about the same time I started swim training. As I got better, the watch tracked more accurately. I used to get all sorts of mis-ID'ed strokes. Even when doing strong wall pushes, I used to get large distance miscounts as well.

  • ..anyhow, once I started swimming consistently under 2:00 per 100, and closer to 1:45 now, both have gotten much, much better.

  • What is your speed? Could you post a link to one of your workouts?

Interesting. I assumed the difference between identifying strokes correctly or incorrectly was just how closely technique resembled textbook, but I can see how pace could make a difference too, because the acceleration forces would likely be greater.

With stroke improvements I find that when I try and swim long I have lost any speed gains that I had because my stroke count just creeps up and up. I also feel like I'm running out of air.

This month, drills make up about 15% of each workout, and we’re continuing intervals. The focus will be on speeding up while maintaining good stroke technique, lots of stroke counting this time.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had luck with moving to a five-stroke breathing pattern. Is this okay for endurance swimming? What are its benefits and drawbacks?

As we enter the summer months of training and racing it seems reasonable to discuss issues around heat illness: what is it, how do we recognize it, what can we do about it, and how do we prevent it.

The three disciplines of triathlon are steeped in rhythm. Think of watching a well-trained swimmer, gliding smoothly down the lane, arms moving like clockwork, breathing every third stoke.

Most of us in the triathlon world are concerned with more than just fat burning. There are certain situations when it’s appropriate to use fins during a workout.
