Extreme Veteran 815 Shawnee, KS | Subject: RE: The Official (Kansas Forum) Kansas 70.3 thread They average your time by a distance of 56 miles. You have to ride perfect tangents to get that distance, or a course could be long or short. What distance did your computer say? |

Extreme Veteran 815 Shawnee, KS | Subject: RE: The Official (Kansas Forum) Kansas 70.3 thread I think everyone, except Reece, had a pretty good day. There were a lot of PRs set. We got a little rain overnight at the camp ground, but it cleared up by the time the race started. Winds weren't to bad, mostly 10-15 mph. They did pick up later in the day, so the longer you were out there the worse it was. It got warm in spots on the run since there is no shade, and the temps were around 80 at this point, but the crowds are great and I love this run course. As far as I know Jayhox went ~4:46, Pete went ~ 5:11, Ryan was ~ 5:36 and I was ~ 5:37. So, it was a much better experience than last year for me. |

Extreme Veteran 1279 | Subject: RE: The Official (Kansas Forum) Kansas 70.3 thread Here is my recap and results: Got to the park about 1:30 Saturday and met Jon at the campsite. We were going to do a short ride and run before I went through checkout because the line were so long. Met up with Reece who was renting a set of Zipps for the race. Was taking a long time to get them mounted, so Jon and I went for our ride. Jon had a problem with his handlebar clamp so he got it fixed at the Elite Cycling tent while I checked in. We put up my tent which was a fiasco due to some problems with the tent rods. Brandon showed up at the campsite and we went for a short run together. Jon and I went to dinner at 23rd St. Brewery so I could get my good luck Thai Chicken Pasta and a pre-race beer. Jon had lasagna. Back to the campsite for one more beer to help me sleep and some good conversation while we prepared our gear for the morning. Rain started about sunset (9:30-ish) so we headed for our tents. Rain started getting heavy with some higher winds and I wasn't sure if my tent was going to stay up. But it did, and we go tthrough the night with some off and on sleeping. 4:30 wake up. Still spitting rain and not sure what the day would bring. Reece was supposed to meet us at the campsite but had not made it in by then, so we figured he was running a little late. Come to find out, he had been pulled over for a broken license plate light which made him late to the park and started a domino effect that turned really ugly. You can catch up on that in other threads (I think). Jon and I separately headed to T2 for setup then down to the lake for T1 and the race. Jon forgot his goggles and came back down just in time to see Reece sitting on the side of the road down to T1 with blood streaming down his face. No race for Reece and he was lucky to not be on the way to the hospital. Jon informed me of this while waiting at the Swim In chute. Broke my heart and had me distracted because Reece doesn't deserve things like this. But we all regrouped as the pros were coming out of the water as we were heading down the chute. Crowie was in 3rd but looking casual and in control. The swim is my thing. I felt good in training leading up to the race and wanted to break 28 minutes in the water. Got to the front for the start and took off. Had 3 body lengths on my wave by the 1st buoy and put it in cruise from there until I hit real traffic. In general, the packs of slower swimmers ahead stayed spread out enough I could pass without incident. Only had to stop and regroup twice when someone cut directly in front of me. Made it to the finish feeling great about the swim. Swim: 25:45 T1 went very smoothly, although I think I stepped on a rock without knowing it which would catch up to me on the run. Helmet, sunglasses, shoes, gels . . . and off! T1: 2:24 The bike started out with a higher heart rate and breathing than I had hoped. Adrenaline. Got caled down in the first 1.5 miles and fell into a rhythm. Unlike last year, I didn't have a single person pass me until mile 15. The 2nd wasn't until mile 19. Things were good. I felt great and in control. I wanted to maintain at least 21mph for the bike and was over 22mph going into the tougher hills on the way out to the western turnaround. Had very little traffic pretty much the entire bike. made it through the 2nd aid station and was disappointed that the girl dropped the banana as I reached for it. Oh well, can't blame her -- all of the volunteers were PHENOMINAL all day so I can't complain. But I was feeling hungry so I downed my 2nd gel of the bike ride. Made the turn of death to the south and told myself it wasn't going to get to me this year. The ride south was tough, but it gave me encouragement that my off-season training had paid off. Not nearly as bad as any other time I have been on that stretch. Made it back through Lone Star and finally got my banana at the 3rd aid station. Yum! The next stretch to the back of the dam hill was the only place the wind bothered be. Don't know why, but it did. Made the turn to the hill and looked at my Garmin: 21.7mph. Awesome! I could take the dam hill easier because I had some speed to spare. Made it to the top and had only dropped to a 21.5mph average which I made up by the end of the dam and into the park. Back to T2 while dialing it back a bit to save and prepare my legs. Bike: 2:35:02 and 21.67mph average T2 was much better than last year, although I forgot to put on some sunscreen. My family (Team Neon) was there with Reece cheering me on. They are all awesome. Shoes, visor, more gels, belt . . . and off! T2: 2:04 The run started well. Legs felt good. Heart rate good. Not too bloated from drinking on the bike. Goal was to maintain a 7:30/mile pace. Started out pretty well maintaining that. I was NOT going to walk the aid stations like last year. And I didn't for the most part for the first 8 miles. My best split was 2.2 miles to 4.6 miles at 6:57 pace. Going up the hill the first time was tough, but manageable knowing a quick right hand turn towards the top and an aid station right after. First lap around the campsite was good. Got to see the family which always helps. Not as "festive" as last year and only one sprinkler. Bummer, but still a great run course. I always forget how many turns there are on the east side and kept thinking the turnaround was just around the next bend, only to have yet another set of turns to go. I started the 2nd loop starting to doubt myself, but suddenly found a burst and cruised past the eastern turnaround and back past the spectators near T2. Got down the hill fine but my motor stalled going through the aid station down by the lake and had trouble getting any speed going to the hill. Decided a quick walk up the hill was a good "reset" and jogged to the midddle cone up the hill and shut it down to walk for 30 seconds and regroup. That worked and got me going again with the help of my family and Reece as I ran past our campsite. I had been craving the cold watermelon wedges we had in the cooler so I asked them to bring it to the finish line as I ran by. The next trip around the campground was rough with spurts of speed when it felt right and walking through a couple of the aid stations. I also had my buddy who is a great runner going by me the other way a few times yelling "Vegas, Baby!!!" to keep me motivated. That was enough to get me around to the finish for a good run to the line. My goal was a 1:40 or better. Run: 1:40:52 Total = 4:46:07 So I demolished my goal time and placed 9th in my age group. Got a kiss from my wife and kids and developed a grin that wouldn't go away. Now for the Vegas slots. I eventually made it over to the results tent about the time they posted the age group allocations for Vegas. 50 spots total (100 last year) and only 6 spots for Men's 40-44. Yikes. Might be tough to get one. But only 1 was claimed at that time. I found some buddies from KC and one of them knew, or knew of, the other guys in the top 6 and said they were essentially "ringers" and did not need the Vegas slots. A review of the top 6 later proved that they were some damned fine triathletes and I had nothing to hang my head about losing to them. So my hopes were up. Waiting for the awards/roll down was filled with rehydrating, food, rehydrating, beer, rehydrating, more food, more beer, more beer, then more hydrating. I had at least 20 people ask me where to get the beer. I suggested they all remember a beer cooler next year. ;-) The awards seemed to take about 2 days to complete, then the roll down. They got to my age group and I was quickly offered a spot and jumped at the opportunity. So, that is my race report that only covered about 1/2 of what went on during a fun and eventful day for all of the people I knew at the race. |

Veteran 419 | Subject: RE: The Official (Kansas Forum) Kansas 70.3 thread I had a PR and beat my goal of 5:15. I thought conditions were great. Little choppy on the swim, but nothing too bad. I got a little warm on the run, but I will take that over cold ant day. I just threw ice in the shirt at the aid stations. I had been fighting a cold and sat with soe neighbors by the pool from about 2:30-9:30 drinking beer and grilling out. Not sure that is te best per race strategy but it's how I train so I guess it's how I should race. |

With a year to prepare you will be fine, as long as you prepare in that year. |

Veteran 419 | Subject: RE: The Official (Kansas Forum) Kansas 70.3 thread You would be fine. I would be sure to train through the winter. Swimming and running are easy. I would either hit some spin classes or have a few good trainer rides a week as well. I like having a spring half or full marathon as well. Makes sure I'm in run shape. you see way too many walkers at this race. Being in good run shape and not walking will help you pick up lots of places. I am not doing the race next year but am sure we will have groups going out to ride the course. Plan on making those if at all possible. |

I would grab the free plan on here and adjust to fit your schedule. I change the time to distance, I know that isn't popular but I like it. Basically my plan looks like this Monday- ride 25 or spin with 3 mile run after Tues- master swim. Maybe some track work for speed Wed- ride 25 or spin with 3 mile run thurs- master swim and half of long distance run Friday- off Sat-long run, I will build up 2 weeks then fall back 1. Up to 16 miles Sunday- long ride. Up to 75 or 100 Life does get in the way so these change from time to time, but this is my basic template. May do spin class in the winter instead of riding outside too |

Extreme Veteran 1279 | Subject: RE: The Official (Kansas Forum) Kansas 70.3 thread Pete gave great advice. Train from now through next year. During the race next year you will be glad you spent those long, grueling hours on the bike (trainer), in the pool, and on the roads in cold and gloomy January. Like Pete said, a full or half marathon in the early spring will give you a good measure of your fitness. |

Note, this "critique" is obviously coming from someone who's never ridden the "dam hill". Pretty awesome improvement. Thanks for all the race reports people. I don't know about others, but I enjoy reading them when I can as I always learn something that I hadn't thought of to be prepared for. Also, sometimes when you see just a finish time, you don't understand the rigor that went into it...whether it's fast or slower, I'm learning each race is unique. |
