I'm looking for suggestions on when to apply suntan lotion and what type works well for a long training session or HIM race. I don't have the base tan I was planning for an upcoming race. Do you reapply at some point? Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm a firm believer in applying sunscreen before you leave home for the race. That gives me the time to apply carefully and thoroughly and it also gives the sunscreen a chance to soak into your skin. I've never had a problem with burning at races using this method.

The only time I've reapplied sunscreen at the race was at Ironman.

i bought some small spray bottles for like $1 each at Target this week to put at each transition of my HIM this weekend. just going to do a quick spray of the shoulders/neck/arms and go. i guess i could technically pocket the one before the run and spray while running out of transition, but some of the people around me might not like inhaling the fumes...

i will be applying sunscreen in the AM before going to the race start too

If you can find scape it stands up to the swim and the rest with one application

I take a shower before my races and long workouts. I put on Neutrogena Sport sunscreen early so it can soak. Also, started using De Soto Arm Cooler sleeves. Those are the best things ever. Don't forget chapstick with SPF.

If you put on sunscreen before getting body marked, the number comes off easier.

Thanks for the suggestions. Going to try the spray at transition and lotion up before the swim. I didn't even think about the Chapstick. I'll add it my shopping list.

Also, don't ignore the eyes. This past month was retinal melanoma awareness month. I'm not a fan of sunglasses (sweat, slipping...), but u can't argue the UV protection your peepers.

Coppertone sport for me (blue container). Love the summer smell. Blistex (green container) chapstick with spf for the lips. Same ones I use for sailing - which is more intense (because of the reflected sun).

I highly recommend that you reapply sunscreen at both transitions. I try to use the Zinc stick for my face, lips and neck and then some good quality sport/water sunscreen for the rest of my body. I, unfortunately, didn't have anyone to help me put sunscreen on my shoulders and back that were exposed wearing Trisuit at my HIM in January (Key West--very much closer to the equator) and I got a pretty heavy duty burn on that area, the back of my neck and the back of my legs. So, don't forget your backside. I was just diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma on my leg from too much sun and a dysplastic nevus on my scalp, so please wear hats and sunscreen, and kick butt!!

Scape was awesome, but they went out of business last year.

I tried out Planet Sun for the St George 70.3 a few weeks back. I applied it before I left for the race and I had NO sunburn (no re-applications either).

The thing with the spray sunscreen is that it is really hard (for me) to get good coverage. Every time I use it, it looks like I graffiti'd myself. I get crazy weird sunburn patterns because I can't seem to get consistent coverage.

just FYI, a "base tan" has an effective SPF of MAYBE 2.  don't count on that to protect your skin from the sun!

I live in the tropics and use clothing to cover up, Neutrogena 70 sport (but have some Planet Sun being muled down at the end of the year) on my face and diaper rash cream (zinc, baby) on my arms. I am still quite dark, but that's what you get living in the tropics. i do not, however, burn with this regimen.

I put on waterman sunscreen before I leave the house. Then for a him or along training session I'll reapply partway through. Like t2 after the bike.
