Edinboro Triathlon
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m
Overall Rank = 75/131
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 10/12
Pre-race routine:

First time setting up for transitions - Cooler (to sit on, and drink)
Event warmup:

Nothing special, relax and walk back and forth from parking to transition
Swim
  • 11m 12s
  • 528 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

the first half was good, getting to the boat was good, passed some swimmers and tried to be courteous with hitting people. But the Turn around the boat bunched people up way to long. Could not get back into a rhythm. Guy couldn't swim straight behind me and kept running into me. So I ended up side stroke for about 200 meters.
What would you do differently?:

Got my wetsuit one week before the race (backordered for 3 weeks). I would have done more open water swims. But I think all was good if I could have just stayed out of traffic a little more. Otherwise it was good. But I'm not a good swimmer, started swimming in November. (couldn't swim 100m without rest)
Transition 1
  • 03m 43s
Comments:

Having only taken off my wetsuit one time, it was not hard. I can't stand my feet being sandy and grassy, so I had to get them cleaned off. Wet didn't bother. Did get a drink but didn't carry one on my bike. Forgot to grab a bite of energy bar.
What would you do differently?:

Bigger towel to wipe feet off with, and had a plan where to throw my wetsuit.
Bike
  • 30m 46s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.67 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was good, passed a lot of racers, and didn't get passed once. Missed a shift on an uphill, but recovered pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Being a short race, I should have gotten out of the saddle a little more on some of the uphills to gain some momentum. Eaten something small before getting on the bike. A little extra energy would have helped.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Pretty good transition, but forgot to drink and take a bite of energy bar.
What would you do differently?:

Gotten a drink in transition, and bite of bar, but went pretty well.
Run
  • 27m 54s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Would have liked a flatter course, but it was ok
What would you do differently?:

Drank in transition, and tried to maintain a little faster pace in the first 1/2 mile, but steep hill was a killer at about the 1/3 mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Family at the finish, took about 5 minutes for heart rate to go from 170 to 115 after finish. Ate Banana and water, and protein bar.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First timer - got to swim better, and run faster

Event comments:

It's a good race for a beginner. Pretty Cheap (value) for a first race. Too expensive to do one of those Sanctioned races for your first one. But I will do one next year.

Water clarity was bad, could see bubbles and feet at 2 ft and less.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Any good race director will go over the triathlon swim course directions many times.

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
