Total Time = 1h 30m 51s
Overall Rank = 216/393
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 18/29
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 am. Ate 1/2 c oatmeal with milk and half a cup of coffee. Got to park about 6:45. Set up transition, ate a packet of fruit snacks, then began warmup.
Event warmup:

Jogged for 5-6 minutes, then put on wetsuit. Swam lightly, stopping for lots of breaks, 10-15 minutes.
Swim
  • 17m 17s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. Water temp was comfortable, and warmup allowed me to be relaxed at start. Got some drafting in first 200, and again for 25-50yd later on, but group was too spread out to stay with anyone consistently. Contact wasn't too distracting. Did get a little nauseated towards end...Water got a little choppy; maybe seasick?
What would you do differently?:

Would have been nice to find someone to draft from for a little longer, but my effort level was steady.
Transition 1
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

No sitting this time! Marched my way out of my wetsuit while dealing with helmet.
What would you do differently?:

Wanted a drink of plain water but couldn't find my water bottle.
Bike
  • 43m 27s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Maybe went a little harder than I should have, but I figured my run was short so I wouldn't suffer for too long.
What would you do differently?:

Need to build more strength in quads. They burn even when the rest of the effort feels manageable.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
What would you do differently?:

Could have cleaned up this transition a little.
Run
  • 25m 31s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 05s  min/km
Comments:

Had NO idea how fast I was running without my Garmin. Felt hard but slow (rubbery legs off of bike)...then my first mile was around 8:10! Slowed up a little. Run was hard effort, but steady. Not much kick left at end! But this was a solid PR effort.
What would you do differently?:

Should wear my Garmin to make sure I don't start too fast.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back to swim start to get neoprene socks I'd left before my wave start.

Event comments:

Started late due to traffic jam at entrance to park. Luckily it wasn't too cold, because they announced the delay after I was in my wetsuit. I did put off getting in the water though.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

Well its the middle of winter and there is 5 inches of snow on the ground and I am too cheap to buy a gym membership and take spinning classes, so what do I do?
