Pre-race routine:

First Tri while sleeping in a hotel - was within easy riding distance so we didn't have to worry about traffic or parking. Woke up - ate a 2 egg omelet two pieces of toast and a banana and a glass of milk. bathroom break and got dressed. Headed out and set up in transition. The Oly was going after the sprint so I ate a PBJ during the course talk
Event warmup:

Took a ride on the bike to check the mechanicals and swam 50 yards or so to make sure the wetsuit was in place

Comments:

Found a pace I was pretty comfortable with right away - lost a little in the middle but pulled it together pretty well at the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cold and wet conditions on the bike - fatigue on the run

Event comments:

The format with the Oly going after the sprint led to a strange two-part race. My wife won her age group yet by the time she finished her race the sprints and elite awards were done - most of the prizes had been given away and all the hot food was gone. When I went through the line (I waited to cheer her in before went to get my food) I was told that they only had cold veggie sandwiches remaining. When I said I was dissapointed (no anger) the volunteer told me I should have run faster?!? The age group awards are really nice - and they had an entire second award ceremony for the Oly but by then most of the crowd had left with the lousy weather.

Age Group: 6/24
Overall: 142/297
Performance: Below average
Suit: Full profile design bionic 2
Course: Started out cross wind - water was pretty dark and smelled of outboard fuel. After a left turn we swam down wind for probably half the total yards. Ran into a thick band of weeds about halfway down this leg. Another left turn brought us back into the wind and sighting was difficult as the final buoy was pretty small compared to the other turn buoys.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
