I currently have the Timex Global Trainer. Not a bad watch but it's pretty much useless for swim sessions. Due to it's size I'd rather just use a stopwatch than it. Also on B/R you can only have 4 options up (Time, Hr, Cadence, MPH/pace) and can't cycle through any. I like new gadgets and have heard great reviews about the 910xt. Other than the lap counting feature is there anything the Garmin can do that the Timex can't? Anybody gone from one to the other. Trying to get pros/cons before dropping $$$ on a watch.

I hate the Global Trainer with a passion. Can't get it to sync to any computer, not user friendly or reliable. Would jump to the 910 in a heart beat if I had the money right now.

That's weird. Never had that problem. I bought a 910xt and with the exception of swim metrics and wireless syncing they're very similar. I thought the TGT was great for the price

I have the first series of TGT. I liked it for my runs. It was dead on with miles and gave me all the needed info. However this year I saved up and my one big expense to the tri money pit was the Garmin 910xt and I will not go back to the TGT. The Garmin gets satellites much faster and keeps them. I can do multiple custom screens for each sport. the multi sport mode is much easier to use, Garmin connect that holds your data is awesome. You get the same type of information but its just a little easier with the Garmin. Now the swim information is great. I can not afford a swim coach and to be able to get and understand my SWOF info and be able to track my swims in pool or open water swims is priceless to me. My TGT never could do a open water swim and the Garmin can. It also has a quick release system you can buy extra that mounts to your bike and then wrist. I say in this case they are close as far as what they can give you, but the Garmin has a couple extras that make it worth while. Like I said to me the swim info is great.

The things you pointed out are pretty much the biggest differences. You are gaining more in convenience than function.

The pool swimming mode is sensor based so it really is just guessing. if your form is consistently good the watch returns accurate readings. If your form is inconsistent it will return inflated results.
