Subject: How to prevent blisters during long runs?
I have gone as far as 20 miles and no blisters ::knock wood:: but this is more of a prevention strategy for IMCDA. I heard "tape" in the special needs bag. Is this ANY kind of tape, like electrical, or is there special sports blister tape? (hey, you never know, I've used electrical tape to keep my toes warm before I had cycling shoe toe covers). What other ideas do you have? I put vaseline on the inside of my shoes, may even put some on in T1 before the bike, and will have blister gel pads on my feet already before the swim.

Coincidentally, that fatty part right below the big toe tends to hurt during long runs, I'm sure the more I run the more I will get used to it, but any strategies to minimize that pain? Hasn't stopped me from running yet.

Thanks!

Duct.

But don't use tape as a preventative measure, only if you need it as a last resort.

Wrightsocks work perfectly, and don't hurt when you take them off, as I imagine tape does. Also, at risk of being snarky, use shoes that fit! It's possible the toe box on your shoe is too big\small, or that the heel isn't snug enough. Took me a couple years to find "my" shoe.

I body glide the heck out of my feet before long runs, paying clost attention to the toes.

Body glide before runs and they have packets of body glide powder you can carry with you.

I developed very nasty blisters from my last IM.  I find it better not try to adjust or do anything as it often makes it worse.

Don't get water on your feet in the marathon. Yet my first IM in the rain, no blisters.

Talcum powder inside the shoes before long runs works well.

1000-mile socks plus vaseline between my toes works for me on Long Runs.

Body Glide for me.  Mostly on my the back of my heels, balls of my feet, top of my arch in the area that contact the edge of the shoe opening and other potential hot spots.  I'll use Vasoline in a pinch, but find it doesn't last nearly as long and can be messy.

In really hot weather I'll also sprinkle some talcum powder in my shoes to help absorb moisture.

LUBE- I learned this training for marathon in the fall. Body Glide makes a liquid powder, comes in a tube spread between toes and hot spots. Good wicking socks too. There are many other lube products out there. Some use vaseline on toes/hotspots.

I have never been able to get tape to stick (including duck tape). Super glue, OTOH, lasts just fine through long days (and the swim). I usually go NewSkin (if you have a sensitivity to the cyanocrylate), SuperGlue, then body glide.

But if you haven't had an issue yet, why try something new on race day?

I used to get blisters until I realized that the only way to go for me is to wear thin and tight fitting dry fit / tech socks. Also make sure that your shoes are snug so that your feet do not slide around in the shoes.

If you haven't had any problems, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING. For IM bring extra socks, and tape for an emergency. But do NOT change your routine that has worked for you thus far. Nothing new on race day.

I use body glide on my feet for long runs and it works great. But like others have said...NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY! seriously, unless you plan to try it out before hand, I would hold off. If you can go 20miles without blisters I think an extra 10k would not be an issue.

Wright socks worked wonders for me.  I used to blister on every run. I am personally not a fan of body glide because it did nothing to help me but I know others have used it with great success

For my IM runs I have a snack size baggie in my Run bag AND in my run SN bag that contains
1-Small roll of tums...I have never used them but I usually save someones race by giving them away.  You can get a 3 pack of a small roll at any pharmacy and put on in your bento box too.
2-a few electrolyte tabs
3-2 tylenol
4-some blister bandaids.  You can get these in any pharmacy. J&J made them originally but everyone has a knock off now
5-a strip of kineseo tape.

this bag fits fine in a tri top pocket and if I don't need the one at SN I just leave it in the bag

Thanks for the tips I'll prob end up using talcum and BodyGlide on the feet and Vaseline inside the shoes and just have the blister pads and duct tape in special needs 2 if needed. If I can go 20 I can probably go 26, I guess. The shoes are good, they only start giving me issues in the double digits lol I used to feel hot spots at 10 miles, then 11, then 13, now around 16. I'm VERY heavy footed (in the indoor track people turn around to see what that noise is behind them... in races I just think, that's right, it's a bull, coming after YOU!! lol So I'm very conscious in long runs to think light feet, running on clouds, etc., and I'm somewhat successful in that if I really focus I start landing MUCH softer. Got it, if it ain't broke, don't fix it

I had never heard of Wrightsocks and just purchased some because of this thread, very high reviews, and I have two runs this week to test them out, I usually do ALL my runs (and rides) in ONE pair of thin biking socks and I could use an extra pair (they get washed A LOT).

Trust me, I learned water is your enemy, I will develop blisters within a mile if my feet get wet.
