Pro 4174 Keller, Texas | Subject: How do I start a running group? Been thinking about it for awhile now. This sport has given so much to me, and I am at a point in my life where I want to start giving back. Think the mid-life crisis may be starting (going to be 49 in September). I have been thinking about starting a C25k group of older women but don't know where to start. I am not a licensed coach so not sure if there are potential liability issues. I also don't know where to start. How do I find people who may be interested? I could start a FB group, but then what? Has anyone started a local running group that can share some experiences? Thanks! |

Extreme Veteran 542 Pauls Valley, OK | Subject: RE: How do I start a running group? We tried to start a running club several times here in our community to no avail. The established runners were content running on their own. Then we got a new recreation center/pool/ workout facility. A few of us got certified to teach fitness classes to get the club going. For that we had to have CPR, insurance, and group fitness certification. One was also personal trainer certified and worked at the facility. We decided to start a Couch to 5k program for the New Year at the facility, but the director mandated that everyone coaching was fitness instructor certified. We had many show up and less finished. We had a goal race that everyone was training for. We printed up t-shirts for them to wear as a group. Then we planned the next race and so on. It has been two years and many from that group still run together. Another group splintered off of that to train for various 1/2 marathons. Sometimes we'll meet for speed work at the track, or sign up to do mud runs, 5k's, etc.... We still have a hard time getting the self proclaimed "serious" runners to group up. When we were trying to start a running club we had no luck. When we started a c25k group a running club evolved on it's own. |

Both of the "big" local running stores around here host a variety of running groups (just for fun, training for specific races, track workouts, etc.) - I'm sure they are all led by volunteers like you. Might be a good way to start! |

If you don't already have a local track/running club, then checking with the local running stores, gyms or YMCA might be a good starting point. We have a lot of local standing runs that aren't necessarily sanctioned by any group, but folks just traditionally show up at a certain time and place to start. Some of the more popular runs will split up into smaller groups by ability or distance. Mark |

I started running with a C25K group hosted by the local running store. I would try to work it through them. Use their FB, email lists etc. to build interest. I've been a loyal customer ever since. |

Maybe some flyers with the FB group name (and start a FB page)? Or meetup.com? |

Maybe some flyers with the FB group name (and start a FB page)? Or meetup.com? I ran with a meetup group in London and it worked out very well. You couild tell a lot of it was singles trying to meet people but that's cool, it was a big group and no CPR certs required. |

Maybe some flyers with the FB group name (and start a FB page)? Or meetup.com? This is what I was thinking. Nothing formal through a running group, just local people. Might have to think about meetup or a FB page. And C25k = couch to 5k |

Might be a good way to start! I was about to say, look at Luke's Locker or Run On. They are always looking for coaches for their various running programs. |

Pro 5761 Bartlett, TN | Subject: RE: How do I start a running group? I started one through my church. We had 35 people sign up for it at the start and normally have about 15-20 show up for weekly runs! We set a goal race and then did a 12 week c25k program!
It has been really fun to see them progress into runners! |
