Subject: shin splints!
So my knightmare has come true, I have been running 5k 3 times a week for several months now and could feel the shin splints creeping in slightly but was able to control them by taking an extra day off running. Lately I have increased to 7k runs twice a week and felt good this past month until Sunday, by the time I got home my left shin especially was throbbing. Since then I have iced, massaged, rested and stretched and do feel them getting easier by the day. My new zoot ultra kalani 3.0 shoes arrived yesterday which I hope will help with support. My big question is this Sunday I have a duathlon 4k/25k/4k, I fully intend on doing the race but takin it easy during the runs, I am not going to run again until then, is this what most would do?

I would determine the cause of the shin splints and correct it. It's usually some combination of over striding (IME, the most likely), too much running too soon, and/ or too much intensity. If they're bad enough, I'd consider DNSing the race.

glad you are doing better but YES find out WHY you are getting shin splints and eliminate the cause.  Some calf compression sleeves/socks may help and keep doing what you are doing

Another vote for looking into overstriding. There are other causes, but everyone I have worked with personally that had shin splints was an overstrider. Once I was able to coach them to shorten their stride, the shin splints disappeared. Good luck finding the cause and in your upcoming du.

When I first started running again I was hit by them and tried to run through the pain. Big mistake. I had 3 months of PT after that. Turns out it was partially a product of my calves being unflexible and tight.

I did toe tapping while standing up. Heel on the ground alternate 50 taps each side 2 or 3 times build up to 100 taps or more, go back and forth. Do those three times a week to strengthen that tiny muscle. BUT like everyone else said it could be stirde, shoe or form only you can determine that. I started with the cheapest one and it worked. I also do heel walks back and forth. Good luck midessa7

Guideline #2: Do not post profanity Because this forum is viewed by triathletes of all ages, all posts must be suitable for viewing by minors. All profanity must be completely covered with asterisks or completely substituted with "@%$#" symbols. Better yet, leave it out. Any use of creative lettering or partially masked profanity is not allowed and may result in the entire post or thread being deleted. Any use of profanity in a thread title will get the thread removed. Repeated violations of this type may result in a loss of posting privileges. Obscene material is not permitted, nor are links to websites containing such material or anything deemed inappropriate for minors. If what you have to say wouldn't be suited for network TV, don't post it here. Here’s how we approach it: posting here is like going to your college roommate’s wedding reception. You’ll know some of the people at your table, maybe even be close friends with a couple of them but there will also be some who you don’t know at all. Speak and behave in the forums as you would at that wedding reception table and most all problems can be avoided.

God created shin splints to tell you that you are doing something wrong. To answer the specific question, as I suffered splints the first year I entered running as a sport, yes I would not run until this weekend.. Running more will only do more harm, and you gain nothing at this point with four days to go since it takes about 10 days to maximize the effects of any run. If you didn't have splints you'd likely taper to maximize benefits or train through depending on your fitness level, but you have have splints and that calls for rest, ice, inclination stretching and massaging (and compression - wear compression socks or sleeves during the day). Secondarily, you can continue to train, just not your legs. There's dietary training (eating properly and avoiding alcohol), sleep training (getting enough), and stretching that will give you far more benefit with 4 days to go then another run or two.

I am not an expert by any means, but maybe your shoes are worn out? how many miles do you have on them?

The new shoess might help, i know when i start feeling ITBS knee pain or mild Shin splints its time to go shopping for new shoes.

Good luck with the recovery!

I've rested them for 6 weeks, twice. I've had Active Release Therapy, massages, I'm doing Trigger Point, and stretching. Yet, I'm still having issues and can't get above 3 miles.

Shin splints occur in up to 13.1% of all runners. Sixty-percent of those presented with this complaint have errors in training.
