Federal Way, Washington
United States
BTO Multisports
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 23m 39s
Overall Rank = 17/159
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 2/23
Pre-race routine:

Up early, grabbed coffee and an oatmeal to go at Starbucks (they forgot the cream in my coffee, grrr!). Enjoyed a pretty drive with great views of Mt Rainier.

Ran into a ton of friends so spent a lot of time talking, then finally realized I had better think about the race for a minute and went ahead and set up my transition area!
Event warmup:

Got in the lake and swam for a few minutes while the Oly race was on their first lap. Probably should have stretched or ran or something....but oh well.
Swim
  • 09m 56s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Yeah, first tri in a couple of years.....I felt pretty good...got into a couple of 'fights' jockeying for position but nothing bad. One person stopped right in front of me suddenly and another next to me suddenly breast stroked and kicked me in the ribs but missed full contact. Otherwise not bad at all.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps a bit more training! LOL Twice last week is all I have done in two years for the most part.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Bike
  • 44m
  • 14 miles
  • 19.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty fast bike ride, it went by quickly. Passed a lot, only got passed by a couple of people wearing aero helmets who I assume were doing the Oly.
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder up hills.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 26m 32s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Not bad considering my right foot felt like a log for about two miles. Also haven't run fast lately. And it was a lot of uphill. I just tried to keep a pretty steady cadence for the most part. Got passed about 3 times and passed a couple, but it was pretty sparse out there.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, dammit!! Possibly practicing bricks would help! :) I was not in it to win it....
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water and a banana and socialized and watched people finish. It was a very fun race, as I knew a whole lot of people there....good friends with the organizer and the announcer which is always nice....not to mention I got to see Lisa (BT) there doing the timing. :) Smiling faces at the finish line are the best!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was surprised to discover I was 2nd in my AG, but pleased, of course! Enjoyed receiving the box of truffles as a prize. :)

Event comments:

Very fun race, great camaraderie being all women.

I started training for triathlons in my early 20's but never entered one. Twenty years later found me still a newbie, with many extra pounds, much more humility and a healthy dose of reality.

Triathlon serves up many humbling moments. The most humbling of days came not during a race day but by email. I had been invited to participate in the Rambling Rose Women’s Only Triathlon. Wow.
