A friend of mine and I talked about doing a swim, bike, run millage challenge. I figure 1 mile swimming would equal 3 running mile and biking is about 4 miles for 1 miles running. Sound pretty close? I want to make the numbers pretty easy to calculate.

There's always the ST points system:
1 point for every 100 yards swimming
1 point for every 1 mile biking
4 points for every 1 mile running

x2.  It's a pretty good conversion for triathletes who don't swim that much.  The easiest way to get points in that system is to swim a lot.  Best bang for your buck time wise and low impact.

That is pretty close to mine on biking. really would be 4 .25 miles running for 1 mile swimming under those rules.

it brings a oly to about 16 miles running which is where I always thought it was around.

I'm not a ST guy, so I had never seen that, but some quick calculations in my head say that is fairly close. If you're a good swimmer, it is probably a little too generous, but for most that is probably a good scale.

Unlike the running or biking portions which seem to have some long rides or runs as an ongoing part the swimming program involves a lot of shorter intervals with short rests in between. Explain?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
