Mountain Man Triathlon
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 36m 34s
Overall Rank = 43/184
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 6/23
Pre-race routine:

Rode 3 miles on my bike to make sure my new saddle felt good and positioned correctly.

Drove to Flagstaff and tried to get a few hours of sleep in the car before the race. (car sleep is never a good thing to try to accomplish!)

Also ate a package of cliff blocks and drank a little water while setting up in the transition area.
Event warmup:

Swam about 100 meters. The water was warmer than the air.
Swim
  • 32m 22s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swam great. It was strange for me to pass people during the swim leg. It movtivated me.

The altitude got some people too as they would stop and tread for a second to catch their breath and I would go right by them.

My sighting was really good too. Practicing at Canyon Lake is really improving my swimming!
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster, but couldn't everybody say that? I swam a PR swim so I'll just keep improving and if I swim that well as I did here I will do great.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Time was 46/184 on T1 and 6/23 age group.

I had a good run down transition to get to my bike, but did not have to run as far with my bike to the dismount area.

I had a good rack spot too, 2nd bike in. Had a little trouble getting my bike off the rack though.

Put socks on this time since I got blisters in my last race.
What would you do differently?:

Practice taking the bike on and off the rack a couple of times when first racking it.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 48s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.48 mile/hr
Comments:

After finishing the bike my first thought was "that bike ride kicked my ass!"

I rode well and ranged from 8mph going up hills to 41.1 coming back down. It is too bad that you can't make it up them as fast as you can come down... LOL

I had a little cramping just after the turn around so I drank 1/2 of my Cliff Shot crisp apple flavor bottle.

Really liked my new Valdora Tri-gel saddle. My hiney was comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Need to do hill climbing training and more time in the saddle. Also needed to drink more water during the first 1/2 of the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Time was 57/184 on T1 and 7/23 age group.
What would you do differently?:

Pretty good transition, maybe just practice to become perfect!
Run
  • 47m 43s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Since the hills on the bike leg tore my legs up, my legs were jello and did not really want to get moving. So I am meagering along and at about 1 1/4 miles my legs are feeling better and I started running better. I then turned the corner and this very steep hill was staring me in the face! But it also was like a civ, bringing people that were ahead of me back to me as I motored up the hill.

I was disappointed to have to grab a cup and fill it at the run turn around. I also only saw the gatorade and after the race heard about where the water was.
What would you do differently?:

The hill was very though after the difficult bike segment. It led me to not think about the beer I had waiting for me at the finish which could have slowed my time down.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice cold Guinness!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The altitude a little 7000 feet and the steep hills.

Also see run "what would you do differently"

Event comments:

First race I have done that I was so spent that I could not muster a kick at the end.

Great race Andy. Dang, now you kick my a$$ in the swim too. The competive part of me wishes I never pointed out that little extra leg kick you had, but the rest of me is glad. Good to see your improvements on the swim.
See ya at the lake.

Good work. The bike leg kicks my every year and isn't running up that hill fun?

Where is this Canyon lake you've been practicing your opening water swimming?

Canyon Lake is about 14 miles East of Apache Junction in the Phoenix area. I train there with AZ Tri Club.

Great job on all three!  Awesome about the swim PR

I love the beer-as-motivator on the run.  Maybe I should try that!
