Subject: Heart Rate Issues on the run!
I am having a problem trying to keep my HR rate low on my runs. I am currently on track to doing an HIM in November, so my runs haven't gotten very long yet. But I'm concerned as my runs get longer, my high HR won't allow me to complete a 13.1 milts run without frequently stopping to walk.

A bit of background: I am 35 years old and for a long time my Max HR was 173, until today I hit 182 on a short 3 mile mostly flat run at an average 11 minute mile pace. I am already going pretty slow, but if I walk my HR drops dramatically. My average HR rate today was 155bpm, which places me at my ZONE 4, a bit high for a short slow run. I can't seem to find a happy medium.

I have only been running for about 2.5 years and I am just coming off a tendonitis ankle injury. I have been slowly rebuilding my mileage again (right now 4 miles max), but my HR feels out of control.

Am I worrying for nothing? Am I being impatient? Is there any suggestions anyone has to control my HR to keep it down in the Zone 1-2 range without having to stop and walk every few minutes?

1) how did you calculate your zones, I'm guessing they are likely inaccurate
2) the heat doesn't go well with HR, if you over heat, your heart rate will drift up.
3) you are coming back from an injury, it might take time. if you are feeling out of breath on your "easy" runs, I would take walk breaks to keep your HR down.
4) my HR, always goes wonky right before I get a cold - is this a possibiliy?

Thank you for your response.

My zones were calculated using the Karvonen method offered on this website. My max was 175 (now 182 apparently) and resting 48.

I ran in the evening and it wasn't hot here in San Diego, low 70s. And I don't feel like I am getting sick.

I guess I just had a bad run, and need to be patient and walk if necessary. Stopping and walking is very frustrating for me.

Is it worth getting my HR and VO2 max tested professionaly?

Probably an easy solution: Check your battery in your HRM.

You shouldn't be anywhere near max HR for an easy run. Summer time will always elevate your HR (about 10bpm for me) but I am guessing your HRM went wonky for a while on your run and skewed your average HR. Can you post a graph of the HR? Sometimes you can see HR anomalies easily on a graph.

I have had my HRM show me at 200+ bpm on an easy run for a good 1/2 mile until it corrected itself. If I would have hit 200+ bpm for 4 minutes, I would have passed out and landed in the ER. Same thing if you were hitting 10bpm over your max heart rate.

What is your RPE while running?

Would you be able to say whole sentences or phrases when doing your zone 2 runs?

Sounds like your HRM is off and/or your zones need to be set based on real world testing.

Just two more thoughts from my own experience...
I find my heart rate is very unstable for the first 2-3 miles of a run, at first it can seem way to high, and then it is all over the place, but after about 3 miles I am warmed up and the HR settles nicely into Z1-Z2 and stays very stable. I have reasoned that this is due to two factors - the first being the need to warm up before taking the HR too seriously, and two - I think the HR monitor itself needs a little moisture to work well against your chest. When you first start out, you are dry and it may not get a good contact. After a few miles you get a little sweat going and that might help the electrical contact kinda thing. Someone can tell me if that makes no sense physically or scientifically, but that's my logic at the moment.

My Heart rate monitor doesn't work well when my skin is dry. I always rub some water on my chest under my monitor just before I go out to run. Even then I still get some wacky readings until I get warmed up and have some sweet on my skin. If you are still seeing high readings stop and take your pulse the old manual way with your finger on your wrist and see if it matches what your monitor is telling you.

I'm getting my VO2 max and HR tested professionally so I know my true zones.

good idea, just make sure that you are fully recovered from your cold before you have your tests done!

Focus on doing the drills and improving each week. Eventually you will go out for a run, look down, and see that your pace has improved, your heart rate is lower, and your cadence is over 90 rpm.
