AA Sports
71F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 17m 37s
Overall Rank = 52/398
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 10/35
Pre-race routine:

dave's bread with pb, banana, GU Brew enroute and water
Event warmup:

2/3 mile jog to warm up, swam a few minutes in wetsuit before race
Swim
  • 16m 25s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

had some tough moments until halfway between first 2 buoys, but got into a good ryhtmn then and started to focus on technique
felt excellent with sighting
What would you do differently?:

first time in an open water race - more technique focus early, maybe push the pace a bit more?
Transition 1
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

hard time getting suit off over watch and timing chip - stumbled around like a drunk trying to get off heels
What would you do differently?:

practice getting suit off over watch and off feet lots more practice here
Bike
  • 34m 10s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.83 mile/hr
Comments:

felt really good getting on bike and going, held good aero position, good pushing downhill, am bummed on bike split - this is almost 2 mph off my Olympic PR but first time doing a Tri
What would you do differently?:

play with gearing and cadence a bit more to try and get a little more effort out - bike leg felt great though
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Went into the wrong corral, maybe twice and got totally messed up in finding the bike rack
What would you do differently?:

I think in the Du's was easier to find bike rack, practiced T1 looking for bike but will work on practicing T2 as well
Run
  • 22m 3s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 28s  min/km
Comments:

GREAT run - felt really solid and not totally shot during the last mile, felt this was by far my best multi-sport run on the pace - was chasing another guy the whole way and he ran out of gas in the last .1 miles and I passed him and another guy in age group - had that kick in the end to finish strong
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the cadence a tiny bit more
not sure if I had better pacing on the bike which set this run up to be better - definately a different feel with this being the first run instead of the second
Post race
Warm down:

some stretches - muscle milk and water/gatorade
did a 1 mile cool down run about 20 minutes later

What limited your ability to perform faster:

some transition issues - wetsuit removal and bike racking
some swimming issues but hey it was the first time!

Event comments:

In some ways this is hard to compare times with Duathlons as I can tell it feels different coming off a swim than a first run - made both the bike and run feel different - not easier per se, just different.
No looking back - will keep on doing Tri's from now on!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

Well its the middle of winter and there is 5 inches of snow on the ground and I am too cheap to buy a gym membership and take spinning classes, so what do I do?
