Warm Springs, Virginia
United States
Set Up Events
76F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 04m 50s
Overall Rank = 75/85
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 5/5
Pre-race routine:

got up and drove to the race - i stayed in a hotel about an hour away...next year if I do again, i'll probably try to stay closer but there were no hotels available
Event warmup:

lite stretching, jumped on the bike to check out first part of the course saw the hill and was like oh crap...
Swim
  • 20m 38s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 45s / 100 meters
Comments:

probably shouldn't have worn the wetsuit without practicing in it...the water was barely wetsuit legal...something to consider for next year - i think it contributed to my general uncomfortableness in the water compared to my normal enjoyment
What would you do differently?:

no wetsuit, or make sure that I get some training swims in a wetsuit
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

considering I'd never done a wetsuit transition before, I was happy with this time - I think it was less than my last tri I ran...I used some advice from other message boards about striping down as I went
Bike
  • 1h 03m 5s
  • 20 kms
  • 19.03 km/hr
Comments:

holy frickin hills batman...the first one going up, I was thinking what the heck did I get myself into...it was rough...I finally found a good gear combo that worked on the back half of the race (not sure about splits, but that felt like a negative split). 2 killer hills at the very last mile...
What would you do differently?:

get some hill training - either for real, or simulated in my training leading up
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

not a bad transition - everything was quick/easy to take off/put on and i was out the transition relatively quick
Run
  • 37m 1s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 31s  min/km
Comments:

I was done by the time I hit the run...grabbed some gel on my way out of the transition area, to pair with some water - but didn't hit a water station until well over half-way though - should have thought about that...
What would you do differently?:

water/gel in transition...not sure where my mind was
Post race
Warm down:

stretching and walking around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of knowledge of the terrain; lack of training on hills; making the dumb mistake of not using my wetsuit prior to the race

Event comments:

overall well-run race, good post race spread for food (lunch bags with cookies, sandwiches, potato/fruit salad), awards ceremony was nice and lots of door prices

one of my comments about the ppl doing body marking - several of my numbers were written under my suit so they were covered up...should remember to bring a marker to races and do my own possibly...

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

My first attempt two years ago was not so successful when a deck nail found its way into my foot a week before the race. But I kept plugging away the last couple of years to stay healthy and get back.
