Age Group Rank = 50/58
Pre-race routine:

This is by far, the most unprepared I have ever been for a race, but yesterday was my 40th birthday, so I had to do it. I have essentially done ZERO training. At the same time, I was totally cool before the race. No pressure on at all. Just finish. I was able to eat some cheerios and a banana. No rush setting up transition. It was a new course so I headed out on the .5 mile walk to the swim start.
Event warmup:

No warmup other than the walk to the swim start, but I wouldn't call that a warmup.
Swim
  • 23m 6s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not swimming takes it's toll. I never am fast in races. I don;t know why. I wore a wetsuit, but didn't need it, and it probably took longer than it should have to get off.
What would you do differently?:

Train. Stay in tighter on the course
Transition 1
  • 04m 10s
Comments:

Too laid back in this transition. I think it's because I exited with my friend and she likes to chat in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Consider no wetsuit to help cut down time and shut the hell up.
Bike
  • 1h 05m 48s
  • 15.8 miles
  • 14.57 mile/hr
Comments:

So clearly I lost a lot of strength with the lack of training. I need to look at my data from this race in other years. I had some fast downhill speeds, but the 2 hills were done so slowly, that it killed my averages.
What would you do differently?:

Train
Transition 2
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

Didn't have race laces on so had to tie shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Race laces. Go faster.
Run
  • 38m 40s
  • 3.15 miles
  • 12m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Running will always be my Achilles heel (pun intended). I am not surprised by this pathetic run since I have run a total of 5.7 miles this year. I did a run walk thing. Mostly run 2 min/walk 30 secs.
What would you do differently?:

Train
Post race
Warm down:

Yeajackson was at the finish cheering me on. Then I cheered on my 2 friends as they finished. We hung out a little and then headed back to the hotel for a shower and a nap.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This is a no brainer....NO TRAINING!

Event comments:

I have been doing this since 2008. It has been a journey from not knowing how to ride a bike to HIM and now my 40th birthday and another race finished. Unfortunately I have suffered from both physical and mental setbacks. I am not sure what my future in the sport will be, but I sure have enjoyed being called a triathlete.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
