Warm Springs, Virginia
United States
Set Up Events
61F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 47m 3s
Overall Rank = 107/132
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

PBH Sandwich & Choc milk for breakfast - set up, put the wetsuit on about 15 mins before kick off.
Event warmup:

Had a swim and a stretch.
Swim
  • 17m 13s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was a huge improvement on my last race. I felt fine throughout, although faded a little half way around. Navigation was ok, not great. Actually picked it up a little on the last leg and was passing a few.
What would you do differently?:

A bit more practice and some more lessons. Do more distance work, and perhaps put more into it rather than hold back.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Considering it was a wetsuit swim, the transition was good. Rode in bare feet and used the elastic band thing to keep the pedals from rotating. Not too bad overall. Forgot to attach watch to bike, so had to do that on the move - not really a winner.
What would you do differently?:

Practice a little more on the mount. Decide what to do about the bike computer.
Bike
  • 54m 19s
  • 20 kms
  • 21.86 km/hr
Comments:

Felt one of my cleats come loose after the first hill, decided to tighten it at the turn around (BIG MISTAKE). Needless to say the cleat fell off about 7km into it and I spent the best part of 10mins looking for a screw. Canibalised my other shoe for another screw and limped home.
What would you do differently?:

Thread locker. That is all...
Transition 2
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Was pretty fed up at this point. Decided that the race was lost, so took my time. Socks on, running shoes on, took a swig of gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Could have sped that up a little, but to be really quick I'd have to go sockless.
Run
  • 31m 58s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 18s  min/km
Comments:

Again, was bummed from the bike. Walked a little up the first and last hills, but ran the rest. Left a fair amount in the tank.
What would you do differently?:

Run it all, and put more into it...
Post race
Warm down:

Chatted with some rugby guys at the end. Took a dip in the lake to cool off, then sat down and had a sandwich..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The bike section sucked!

Event comments:

A really nice, friendly race. Smaller and more intimate than my other race - and nice because of it.

My first attempt two years ago was not so successful when a deck nail found its way into my foot a week before the race. But I kept plugging away the last couple of years to stay healthy and get back.
