Overcast
Total Time = 5h 03m 54s
Overall Rank = 53/592
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 10/88
Pre-race routine:

setting up transition, keep my head clean and clam
Event warmup:

2 mile easy run and a 10 minute swim
Swim
  • 45m 37s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

sighting seemed to go well until the turn, after that had some issues but it might of been due more to current and ebb tide.
This was my first swim with a speed suit. Man is it tight, really tight!
What would you do differently?:

not sure, I thought I did everything right.
Transition 1
  • 04m 7s
Comments:

went well, everything went on quick and easy. not fun having to bag everything but not bad.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 2h 29m
  • 56 miles
  • 22.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a great ride, I crushed the hill that have caused me issues on training rides. my watts were a lot lower than expected during the first hour of the ride but the effort felt perfect.
gearing was all but perfect. Loved the fact I had a group of guys who we kept playing tag with that by the time we hit Jolly Pond I dropped them all.
after the turn on Monticello, it was a long as ride. thought it would never end.
What would you do differently?:

not much if anything
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

great, one of my fastest
Run
  • 1h 44m 4s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

started off great. I was hitting my mile pace averages all the way to mile 5. Mile 6 it got a little rough and from there on it just slowly go worse. I had a few miles there were I was able to drop a gear and get some of my speed back.
after the last trip up the long s turn of hill it started to hurt. the flat section I could not pick up the pace. by the time I got back to last leg I was toast, there was not much left heading into the finish line
What would you do differently?:

not sure what to do better other than train harder and on hills. the heat really didn't get me just those darn hills.
Post race
Warm down:

plan was to do a 10 minute run but I tried and just couldn't. I walked around a lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

current on the swim and hills on the run. I just need to train harder for the run.

Event comments:

Overall ok, wish they would of listen to us about the current but than again it always can't be easy. There were some logistic issues with the transition bags. I am looking forward to doing this race again

You had a great race out there!  That current was brutal on the swim.

Those hills were killer on the run, just enough of them and in just the right spots to hurt--not to mention that you had to do them two times.

Excellent day!

Awesome job! I thought that last hill into the finish chute was particularly painful.

Nice Job!!! You killed it!!! I thought that crazy hill in the neighborhood on the backside of the run course was going to be the end of me!!! I too look forward to racing this course again next year.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

Now, for the last 20 years I’ve always though that jogging seemed about as interesting as watching paint dry, and you know what? That’s how it turned out to be.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
