Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:20. Left house at 5. In line for bus shortly after 6.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 21m 8s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not sure how much the current helped but was happy with my time. First time in the new wetsuit and I think it's much nicer than my previous.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

No issues.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 55s
  • 40 kms
  • 40.00 km/hr
Comments:

Crowded, but given the width of most of the roads it wasn't too bad minus the last 2 miles or so. Lots of slingshot drafting.

Forgot bottle of HEED at home. Ken was kind enough to give me a bottle of PowerBar electrolyte drink...which I proceeded to get discharged from the handlebars at about mile 2. Picked up water around mile 4 at the bottle exchange. Outside of having to deal with a crowded bottle exchange, it didn't affect my ride. Took two Clif Bloks (67cal) around mile 22
What would you do differently?:

Not forget nutrition.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

No issues
Run
  • 41m 53s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 10s  min/km
Comments:

Had some side stitches on and off for the first 3 miles or so. Not sure if not having a sports drink mattered...doubt it. Took two salt tabs and then water from aid stations to drink and throw on myself.
Post race
Warm down:

Found and cheered for teammates and other competitors. There were five M35-39 in the open AG wave that beat me.

Event comments:

Loved the swim buoys!

Great time. Very nice bike, too, on a course that does get crowded and technical at spots. Congrats.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
