So, how did it go with the new start? I am doing IMLP and was interested on how it flowed? How many time groupings were there? everyone in the water by 7?

Thanks for any input

I am also interested in knowing especially from the 1-hourish finishers. To me it seems like the first lap would be great but then since the seeding appeared to take about 25 minutes, you would have to thread through the slower swimmers on the second loop?

I had serious reservations about the swim start but I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't so much as a like as it was corrals, like a marathon. There was room inside each group to position yourself right/left and front/back. I thought the time groupings were pretty big (15 min increments). I put myself in the 1:00-1:15 group and was just fine. They were hoping for 100 swimmers per hour, I think it went faster than that. I crossed the timing mat ~1:30 after the run went off. It was crowded but not awful. I had room to find feet and swim. I didn't get swum over too much and I didn't get kicked until the very end. I think the big benefit was since I was with like-skilled swimmers, finding feet to draft off of was super easy.

I have no previous experience... but I really liked it. I did a 1:12 and seeded myself at 1:15-1:30. I was passing alot of people, but i kept to the inside of all the buoy's so i wouldnt have to deal with the crowds. I never drafted anyone. I did get stuck at the corner (t1) though and people try to swim over you.. i used logic and waited for the person in front of me to go before i could go.

LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVE IT. I was next to last group (1:45-2:00) and I was in by 6:44am.

NO JOSTLING 75%, only when I was on the way on the first lap because it took me 53 mins and that's how long it took the really fast people to get in to their second lap, three quarters of the swim was perfect.

I never participated in an IM mass swim start so I have no frame of reference. The rolling start worked great. I seeded myself in the 1:15-1:30 group and swam a 1:22. There was still a lot of contact, but I expected it. They started out with a group that would be sub 1 hour and then the signs were at 15 minute intervals through the allotted 2:20 duration.

I forget how many groupings. I know there was "less than an hour" and "hour to 1:15" and "1:15 to 1:30" - the last was mine so I quit paying attention after that.

It was my first, so I never experienced the mass start - but I seeded myself about the middle of the 1:15 - 1:30 group and I had virtually no contact with anyone except for a few brushes and having to avoid a few people that got off course and swam diagonally.  It seemed like about 10 to 15 of us entered the water at the same time... I think my only complaint was that we were so spread out, it was hard to find anyone to draft off of.

My brother-in-law was in a kayak and he said everyone was in the water well before 7am.  Like it or not, the first trial of this at Cd'A went very smoothly and got some great reviews.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

Does it matter how fast you go? Does it matter if you win? No. It only matters that you tri your best and smile when you cross the finish line.
