My boss and her husband are expecting their first child.  Bit of a miracle as they've been trying a long time.

The Field Reps are travelling to a meeting and while we're together, we want to host a baby shower.  Apparently I'm the party planner and have no idea.

We're meeting for dinner with some folk from our corporate office, men and women.  I need ideas, please, for a theme?  games? that work for men and women in a somewhat professional setting.

Thanks in advance!

A friend of mine told me that at couples baby showers they give the hubby a bottle of beer (baby bottle) to suck on while the wife opens the gifts.  Also at the last shower I had to throw, we filled baby bottles half way with milk and had a contest to see who could empty their's the fastest. It was pretty funny watching grown adults suck on baby bottles.

A nice "theme", especially if this is their first baby, is books.  Have everyone bring their favorite children's book along with a present so the new couple can stock their baby's bookshelves.

A game that's suitable for work:

Get lots of rolls of toilet paper.  Let everyone pull off how much they think they need to go around PG woman's belly.  See who is the closest - they win a prize.

I saw this on some baby show once:

Get play doh or clay.  Have everone try to create what they think the baby will look like.

Not good for work (unless you work with people you're close with or work in a place like "The Office":

Get diapers.  Get several types of candy bars.  Put one candy bar in each diaper, melt for a few seconds in the microwave.  Make people stick their fingers in the mush and taste to guess which candy bar is which.

To elaborate on the diapers and candy idea....I've been to one where we just smelled the diapers with melted candy bars and had to match numbers on diapers with a list of candy bars.  It's pretty fun.

Another thing you can do is take a couple of diapers, put some mustard inside, fold them up and tape them under a couple of chairs in the room.  Whoever has the chair with the diaper gets a prize.

Write down the names of mommy and daddy on a piece of paper and make copies for everybody.  Have ppl write down possible baby names made from the parents' names letters.

This is a great idea. Keeps people entertained while they open gifts.

If you're crafty you could make a diaper cake centerpiece.  You take a big box of diapers (Costco/BJ's - size 1 - they grow out of newborn too fast) and stack them up in layers to make them look kind of like a wedding cake.  Then you fill in the edges with cute little gifts like bath toys or something.  Here are some pictures of ones you can buy, but you could try to copy one.

One of my favorite gifts was The Baby Book by Dr. Sears.  It's has a very strong leaning to the hippie side though so it's not for everyone - I guess you'd have to know the people pretty well.  It encourages things like nursing, co-sleeping and baby wearing.

One game at a recent Jack-and-Jill shower I attended went like this:

10 people lined up in two "teams" of 5: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Each participant held a chopstick in his or her teeth.

The organizer threaded two pacifiers on person #1's chopstick, who then had to pass the pacis to person #2 without dropping or touching them, on down the line. When person #5 had both pacifiers, that team won. Goofy but harmless. Of course everyone got all competitive about it, which made it funny.

If you're doing a coffee or tea service, you can used bottles for the cream and sugar.  Just cut a 1/4 inch off the tip so that you can pour.  You can also pick up some block and flannel burp cloths for table decor at the dollar store or Target.

+ the string game. measure the mom's belly (around the waist, small of back, to belly button) and then save the string. have everyone else measure out as much string as they think would be needed to measure her around the belly. the person who is the closest wins. (and everyone always WAY overcompensates. funniest moment with this game was at my friend sara's shower when one guest admitted she just measured herself, not pregnant, and she was bigger around than sara was at 8 months along! she was a good sport about it and laughed a lot).

+ change/dress the baby - get yourself one or two baby dolls (i used my daughter's dolls, but you can find them cheap at good will) and have people diaper, dress, and swaddle the baby. fastest time wins.

+ mom/dad quiz - pop quiz about the mom and dad to be. their own baby facts (birthday, time, height, weight, baby habits - good sleeper, good eater, etc., nicknames, favorite color, strange facts. person with the most questions right wins.

+ paper plate game - everyone puts a paper plate on their head and tries to draw a picture of a baby. closest, or strangest, wins.

+ picture game - every guest brings a baby picture of themselves to mount on a poster board, then everyone has to guess who is who. (great in theory, but when i've done this, half the people forget to bring the picture!).

+ name the baby - make names for the baby using the letters from the mom and dad's first names. most names, or most creative wins.

+ wishes for the baby - get a lidded jar, and small slips of paper. each guest writes a wish or hope for the baby. guests can read them aloud as they put them in, or the parents can read them aloud to the group, or bring it home and read them on their own. this one can be a tear jerker! this one was supposed to be done with candles, lighting a candle for each guest's wish, but we did it at a baby shower where we had toddlers, so this was the creative solution the next time around. you can also do this with a guest book.

have fun!!!

One of my favorites is a casserole shower. We had everyone come and bring thier favorite casserole with heating instructions and a recipe card. As the guests walked in, they just dropped thier casserole in a one of the large coolers sitting by the door. Then, the party games began

It really helps to have homemade food without having to prepare it during those first few months..

Go to the store and buy 12 diapers and 12 candy bars.  Melt the candy bars in the diapers.  Pass the diapers around and everyone has to taste the contents and determine what each on is.  It is pretty gross, but the game is alot of fun and gets tons of laughs.  At least it did for us and our weird friends.
