Event warmup:

Couldn't really do much. Had to be at swim start early and it was just a waiting game from there.
Swim
  • 21m 21s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

I knew it was only a mile but iI definitely underestimated how fast I could've been going. Went 1:18 pace but if I was moving, probably could've done 1:10. Swim looked really long at the start so I went slow. Getting hit with a huge log in the river didn't feel too great though.

Still felt strong though and first OW mile swim, so overall good.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Nothing went wrong. Reason the time was high was because of the long run through transition to actually get to my area.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 55s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.43 mile/hr
Comments:

Because I was early wave and quick out of the water, the first bike loop was great. Had very few people around me. Second loop was very packed though. Definitely had to slow down. Course was very hilly with a couple real steep ones. I surprisingly handled it well though. Passed a lot of people. Was expecting to do it in 1:20 so came in right on time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Took my shoes off before the race like I normally do - untying them. Completely forgot to tie them again and was stuck doing it in transition instead of just slipping them on. Put water belt on at my area then while running put bib number belt on.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure shoes are tied.
Run
  • 52m 3s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

First 2-3 miles were really tough to get my legs going. My whole time plan fell apart when I realized I wouldn't be going the pace I wanted for the run, unlike how I did for swim/bike. It was clear that I hadn't done enough long rides with runs after. Wasn't happy with my time.

Had the Nathan Race Belt on so filled Gatorade in that beforehand and drank just from that. Running through aid stations I just grabbed water and poured it over my head. Probably the reason I didn't think it was too hot.
What would you do differently?:

Do more brick workouts with longer bike rides.

Event comments:

This was my first Olympic and it was a good race choice. TriRock did a good job with it. Swim was fast with the current and huge buoys were set up every 100m. Very, very helpful. The bike course was hilly for sure but it was almost all shaded. Run was all flat and in sun for whole second half but plenty of water stations made it easy to keep cool.

Good race with nice course, but the $185 price tag (when I signed up, it was higher later) somewhat makes me not want to do it next year.

Nicely done! Your right though, the price tag is making this race unlikely going forward. There are plenty of Oly distance races for much less in the area.

Congrats.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
