Subject: First Triathlon Coming Up!
Hi--I'm in Columbus, Ohio, and in 3 weeks, I will do my first triathlon (a sprint). I'm 44 and have stayed in OK shape, mostly by swimming and weight training. At the beginning of the year, I made a New Year's resolution to train for and complete a sprint triathlon. Now, I'm about to do it! I'm a little nervous, but I've had such a good time doing the training that I'm mostly looking forward to seeing how I'll do. Although I've been a lap swimmer for a while, I've never been very fast. I never ran before, but I've run a few 5K races now and have done fairly well. Cycling has been the hardest for me, for some reason, but I've come to like it (buying a new bike helped; it really made cycling more comfortable, and having a shiny new toy gave me a boost in motivation, too!).

I'd of course like to do reasonably well, but for me, this one's mostly about completing the event! Any suggestions for my final three weeks?

Good luck with your race and congrats for getting so close to your goal.

No doubt some real pro's will come along with good training tips soon but i would recommend 'thinking' training is a good place to start - eg give some serious thought to your choice of kit (make sure you try training in all of it as well etc), think through all the race prep eg what to take, how to lay it out, the order you'll put it on/off etc and think about your diet plans for the day. This is especially helpful if you have much travelling to do to get to the race as a 4am start soon screws your normal eating routine! If you get the chance to see/ride/run the route then that will help you feel more relaxed on the bike & run etc. Otherwise just think about how much fun you're gonna have!

Good luck.

I'd recommend that you create a race list to help make sure that you are organized before/on race day.  Its really easy to forget equipment and sabotage your big day.  There are race lists on this site as well as other. Contact me if you have any trouble finding some.

Also, just make sure to have a lot of fun and soak up everything all day during the race.

Just get to the tri early, get yourcycling and running stuff organized and relax until the race starts. Don't worry about "winning" or being too slow, you'll do just fine. Just enjoy your first tri; it only happens once! Think of this first tri as part of your training; it will be quite a learning experience. Good luck.
