Pre-race routine:

Bowl of oatmeal with pomegrante bits in it. Glass of water and some Diet Pepsi. Headed out to Lake George around 5:30am

Took my bike over to Kevin at the Gear West truck for some cable and cassette adjustments. He's the Yoda of bikes!

Set up my bike in transition, took my fav spot, on the end next to the fence. Arranged by mat and gear under my bike, so I took up as little room as possible.
Event warmup:

Stretched my hamstrings/calves and then swam about 50 yards to warm up and get used to the water. Goggles were already giving me issues with fogging.
Swim
  • 26m 55s
  • 880 yards
  • 03m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

My mind is my worst enemy here - started out well, didn't go out hot. Then the goggles started fogging up, and between that, the overcast skies and my nearsightedness, it was over before I even got to the first turn buoy. Breast-stroked around the turn buoy, then did a combo of breast/freestyle to the second turn buoy. Winds started to pick up a bit here, and that made sighting a bit more of a mess. Freestyled around the second turn buoy, then continued until I got to shallow water.
What would you do differently?:

Have more faith in my ability to swim open water!
Transition 1
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

Best T1 this season - had the goggles from hell, ear plugs and cap off before I left the water, wet suit unzipped and top portion down before running through the arch. Helmet and shades on, suit off and shoes on. Trotted down to the mount line.

Some difficulty clipping in, told myself to calm down, then took off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - went really well.
Bike
  • 45m 7s

Comments:

Loved this course.
What would you do differently?:

More hydration/nutrition
Transition 2
  • 02m 38s
Comments:

Difficulty getting new shoes on
What would you do differently?:

Wear socks
Run
  • 36m 31s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Started run slowly, stretched out calves a few times. Developed a blister on my left arch at mile 1.5, sucked it up and kept going.
What would you do differently?:

Wear socks and calve compression socks
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank some water and wolfed down a chorizo/egg burrito - fabulous! Waited for Bruce to finish, chatted with over age-groupers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Got scared on swim

Event comments:

Loved the bike and run courses, excellent transition area, USAT official was great at educating on transition ettiquette.

Course: Flat to start with a sharp left turn to main road. First hill on Viking, then rollers. Portion between Viking Road and turn to St. Francis was a wind-fest - gusts, head winds than shifted to cross winds - something for everybody. Geared up and down, rode by myself for most of this section, got passed towards St. Francis. Loved the section through the neighborhood - flat, fast blacktop.

Congrats on a good race - I hate the swim too. I think I'm going to start lessons. I also love the courses - so flat! That USAT guy was wonderful - really trying to educate and not penalize!

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Any good race director will go over the triathlon swim course directions many times.

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
