Overcast
Total Time = 1h 16m 50s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 6/14
Pre-race routine:

The norm - oatmeal with raisins
The AG rank is the rank in the 40+ Clydes
Event warmup:

None - just light stretching. We ran a bit late.
Swim
  • 05m 51s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a 50 meter pool which made ieach lap feel like forever. The water was way too warm at 84'F.
What would you do differently?:

Get there earlier to get a few laps in.
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

They changed where transition was this year, it put it farther away. It was in a grassy area.
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Bike
  • 36m 49s
  • 11 miles
  • 18.03 mile/hr
Comments:

I crashed. Like a big freaking idiot. It was my first real crash on the bike. I added aero bars this past week and rode on them twice before the race...which is to say I'm getting used to them. In the middle of the race a friend passes and I rear up to wave at him and lose balance, over correct and hit a curb and fly off the bike. I slide across the nearby sidewalk. I get up, make sure I'm ok and see nasty road rash all down my arm. It's ugly. I threw my water bottle back on, put the chain back on and go. But, I took it easy for a bit because I was shaken up.
What would you do differently?:

Not crash - next time, I'll finger wave and hollar instead.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Transition had more than one entrance and I didn't realize at first that the bike-in was not the one I went in, so I was expecting my bike rack in an area only to find it further down. It didn't really cost me but a few seconds, like 3-4, so big deal. But, I did take a little extra time to use my towel to wipe my elbow which was bleeding, plus I carried the towel with me on the run. So, from a time perspective, it was below average.
What would you do differently?:

Be more observant prerace. Running late to the race affected that..
Run
  • 31m 7s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Thank the Lord it was slightly overcast. Overall, it was good, weather for the tri. Warm, but the full heat of the day hadn't kicked in. I did my normal run the mile and walked the water stations.
What would you do differently?:

Nada - this was a decent run for me....not good or great, but is representative of where I am right now.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked, talked to people, drank a lot of water. Found my wife and comiserated with her and others over my torn up arm, hip, and torso. Told everyone how dumb I was on the bike.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being a dummy. ;-)

Event comments:

This is a greats, beginner friendly race. The volunteers were great and the new RD, Johnny Z, did a nice job.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
