Member 44 | Subject: Getting Back from Knee Surgery Hi all, I'm hoping for some feedback regarding coming back from knee surgery. I had surgery for a torn meniscus, arthritis removal, and a patella release in April, and I'm still unable to walk properly (my leg doesn't want to straighten fully so my gait is off), which obviously means running is out of the question. i just started getting back on the bike, although I have to take it easy since if I do too much, I pay for it for the next two days. I'm worried that I won't be able to get back to training for next year (I've already deferred by races for this year), which is depressing. A lot of the inactivity has led to some weight gain also, which I have to deal with in order to get back to triathlon shape, so has anyone experienced something similar, and if so, how did it work out? Although doing tris caused me anxiety, I loved it, and miss it. If anyone has any response, I would so appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond! -Kelly |

Just a few questions... are you still in PT? Are you following through with prescribed exercises? Have you voiced your concerns to your doc? It's only been three months, so don't get too down yet. I had ACL replacement and patellar realignment years ago. It can be a slow comeback process, and I understand your frustration. My knee still doesn't extend like it should, so I've started yoga to really work on flexibility, balance and strength. Put in pool and bike time as your knee allows. Be patient and listen to your body. It will come back |

Champion 7704 Williamston, Michigan | Subject: RE: Getting Back from Knee Surgery Well thebiggest things are 1-How bad and how extensive is your arhtritis. We cannot take it out. Arthritis is wear and tear of the cartilage on the end of the bone (articular cartilage) and we can smooth it up but we can't make it go away and unfortunately we don't have anything to make it good as new yet. 2- how is your patella doing? Is it tracking properly now? also 3-is that where you ahd your arthritis? 4-Why will your knee not extend? Hopefully you are doing PT. If not get some PT. Your surgeon can order it for you. That should help a lot. If you are in PT ask about the lack of extension and also the patella issues. Really work on your hamstring flexibility and quad strength
Everyone is very individual in how they bounce back from surgery. I think a meniscal injury in the face of arthritis is very difficult to get over. Get in the pool and swim and water walk, try a stationary bike or the trainer. Hang in there |
