Subject: Long run exhaustion
I'm training for my first IM. I did my first marathon in March this year. Lately after I do a long run I feel utterly exhausted. This is new to me and not sure why. I'm not running longer than I have before, if anything same time but slower pace. I have trouble getting my pace up and it is a fresh stand alone long run. Anyone with ideas/reason for my I'm finding completing my long runs harder now, after more training than what they have been in the past?

When training for your marathon, were you doing anything besides running? How much volume were you doing? Now, for IM training, how much volume (compare hours)? It could be that you're never fully recovered and fresh.

How many total hours of training are you doing for your IM and how accustomed to that type of training volume are you?  IOW, have you done a HIM and what type of training volume were you doing for that?  Or how did it compare to your overall training time of your marathon?

How have your sleeping habits been recently?

I think the intensity of my training is more now, even if my hours are the same. I didn't do as much biking but more running in March. I think my sleep could well be worth looking at. I'm going to try get in an extra hour each night and hope that makes a difference.

did you take sufficient time to recover after your marathon? if you bounced back too qujickly into IM training, you could be paying the price for that now. When is your IM?

You might have answered your own question there.  Ease up a bit and slow the pace down and see if you bounce back.

Have you increased calorie intake to match increased training?

My IM is the end of August in Japan. I pretty much kept training. I felt great after the marathon, not a bit sore so easy for a week and then cut down on running mileage but jumped right in to more riding.

Possible overtraining? Check you RHR first thing in the morning and see if its elevated, a decent indicator if its elevated that you may not be adequately recovered. Yes, sleep more if you can!

Is the long run now a higher percentage of your weekly run mileage than it was before?

Setting aside the fatigue from any additional sports and/or intensity, many find that their long runs are less draining when they are a smaller part of the weekly total. If my long run is 2x or more beyond my other runs, then it really takes it out of me. If the long run is only 50% more than other distances that I do once or twice per week, then the long run tends to be no big deal.

I recognize that my 45 minute jog Wednesday night does not really count as a ”long” run, but for me it was! Yesterday I felt fine…but man, today the legs are SORE.
