Haven't had one of these in a while. Heading for the beach in a couple of weeks, and I love CoJ reading recommendations. What have you read lately that you can recommend?

I'm not into anything heavy these days. I'm currently reading the Hangmans Daughter series. Murder mystery historical fiction circa 1600's Germany. The first of the series was ok. I'm half way through the second book and its quite good. Good characters, plots, multiple story arcs. I'll definately follow on with the 3rd of the series after this one.

On Sal Mal Lane was really great! I read it at the beach 2 weeks ago. Fairyland was really touching also. Stephen King's new Joyland is entertaining.

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn is a pretty good read

but I haven't really had any blow me away type reads since then - which is unfortunate

Weekends at Belview by Julie Holland was fascinating.
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
Virals by Kathy Reichs was an easy read.

Up next for me is One Last Thing Before I Die by Jonathan Trooper

I love Mary Roach - she hits my quirky meter - I haven't read Stiffs yet - but I loved Packing for Space (or as I sub-titled my review, everything you ever wanted to know about eating, drinking and pooping space and were afraid to ask); and Bonk. I have her newest one (Gulp) on the audiobook pile

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - an awesome account of Louis Zamperini's life

I also find all of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child fun, quick, and easy to read.

A few years ago I went on a pretty extensive self study of the Pacific Battles of WWII after my grandpa, who fought there, died.

I don't know if you have any interest in our country's war history, or even WWII, but "One Square Mile of Hell" by John Wukovits, an account of the battle for Tarawa,  is one of the best books I read about that period of history.

I have the JAck Reacher books in the pile - but every time I think about it, I imaging Tom Cruise as Reacher and just have an issue with it...lol

Anything by Christopher Moore...If you've never read anything, I highly recommend Lamb or Fool.

I am currently about 2/3 of the way through REAMDE by Neal Stephenson and thoroughly enjoying it. It's like 1000 pages, though, if that's an issue.

The Last Man by Vince Flynn. Anything by Flynn is awesome. Now in the middle of Inferno by Dan Brown.  It is a little slow, but I am hoping it will pick up.

It won't. This is one book I am sorry I wasted time reading. He could have cut out about 100 pages if he would have dropped the ridiculous constant travelogue.

I am halfway through Brad Thor's "Full Black" and it is great. I also read "Lions of Lucerne" and "The Last Patriot" also by him and they were both outstanding.

"Cooked" by Michael Pollan was outstanding.
Anything by Gillian Flynn is great, she's the master of the "crazy chick" genre.

X3 awesome story. So appreciate those who have served my country and the sacrifices they have made/are making.

RIP Mr. Zamperini. He died today at 97. I remember this thread from a few years ago and read the book, which was awesome, Angeline Jolie is making a movie about him which is coming out this December. Hope it is worthy of such a life as his.
