Total Time = 1h 22m 44s
Overall Rank = 56/132
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 7/11
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4 am, got dressed, fixed a bagel with peanut butter, grabbed a Gatorade and a Pepsi and hit the road. Race was about an hour away and I had to pick up my race packet and get set up.
Event warmup:

Walked the 1/2 mile to swim start and stood in the sun.
Swim
  • 07m 47s
  • 800 yards
  • 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first river swim, and it was unbelievably fast. I swam 800 yards in the same time I usually swim 400. Faster than 1 minute per 100 yards. Temperature was comfortable with the wetsuit and the added buoyancy was nice. Sighted really well and made the exit turn without getting pushed past the exit and having to swim upstream.
What would you do differently?:

NOT A THING!!! Best swim I have ever had in a race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Normal T1 until I went to mount my bike, just as I was getting ready to step onto my left shoe and jump onto my bike, another rider made a sharp turn right in front of me. Fortunately I was able to step back off of my shoe, run around him and re-mount.
What would you do differently?:

Do a better job of getting helmet on while taking off my wetsuit.
Bike
  • 43m
  • 14 miles
  • 19.21 mile/hr
Comments:

The uphills sucked but the downhills were awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Get more hill training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Took a few extra seconds to make sure my feet were wiped clean after getting blisters and abrasions on my last few races
What would you do differently?:

Not run the wrong direction on the way out.
Run
  • 29m 16s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Great course with really good support along the way.
What would you do differently?:

Need to focus more on running and losing weight.
Post race
Warm down:

Took my water, walked back to the truck, called the wife, then walked back to get my bike.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training and weight.

Event comments:

No food or drinks for races afterwards. They did have stuff for sale but I don't normally race with cash in my tri suit. The awards did start very shortly after results were posted.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?
