Subject: Removing Bike Pedals
Hey all

I'm travelling to a triathlon this weekend - flying out there, so I got a cardboard box from a bike shop to pack my bike (one way). I brought my bike to the store last night to get them to show/help me figure out how to remove stuff to get it in the box. They sold me a pedal wrench, I went home, and have no blessed idea how to get enough torque/leverage (not sure which is the right word there) to remove them. Any thoughts or ideas? I need help, and while I could go back to the bike store, I'd much rather not, save a little face (the guy who works there is so cute, I don't want him to think I'm a complete dolt).

Thanks

Just remember that the left pedal is backwards threaded, you have to turn it  clockwise to loosen it. Best way to remember is that as your wrench handle travels over the top of the pedal, it should be moving to the rear of the bike, on both pedals.

As far as leverage, it may help to have another pair of hands holding the other crank, but if you're turning in the right direction it shouldn't take major effort to break the pedal loose.

Edit: the Park Tool website is always helpful for repair info:

A few things:
1. Make sure that you know which way to turn the wrench. The Right Side Pedal is normal but the Left Side is reverse. So Lefty = Tighter while Righty = Looser

2. But it on your bike rack on the back of the car.

3. Hold on to the crank arm and use some force.

If this doesn't work, it could be that the person who put the pedals in last time didn't put any kind of lube/teflon/etc and the pedals will be hard to break. In that case take it back to the bike shop and they can help.

Bear knows what he's talking about. But if you are still having a problem, then go back to the LBS and ask the "cute guy for help". You could do this close to closing time and see if he's available for dinner afterwards. You'll save face this way, unless one or both of you are married. Good luck.
