...blowing raspberries 'thhhhhhhppppt' if you relax your jaw, you can release tension, and you can't have a tense jaw while blowing raspberries. this is in a labor book, i swear!

Well...uhhh...Brett...tell your wife that.

That's actually good advice.  A midwife told us that "blowing" was actually more helpful than sex because the chemical you're trying to get (I forget what it's called) gets to the place it's supposed to get more directly or something.  I don't know the technical details, but I kmnow it worked.  Within hours.  It was freaky.

Uh, you mean, like...? Uh. Really? You serious?!

Totally serious.  I was desperate because my baby was big and they kept saying they were going to induce me.  I didn't want to be induced but her due date was only 2 days away.  I knew if she went past her due date they woudl really pressure me into it, so I tried the advice.  I didn't believe it at first, but I swear it worked - I think I went into labor about 6 hours later.

Ladies take note: MomX3 knows what she's talking about. Time to print this and save it for the next pregnancy.

Well, I'll be damned. You learn something new every day. Now, just who gave you this advice?

Let me guess: you have never heard this end of this, have you?

That is the weirdest yet most randomly useful piece of advice ever.

I got married and had all 4 kids in my 20's. Now I am getting divorced and all my children are mal-adjusted serial killers.

The semen thing is true. Never worked for me, though. Good old castor oil worked, though. All my babies were late.

Jess, Great job on getting all your kids to work as a team, are they for hire?

A midwife.  I swear - and I'm not getting paid by any men.  In fact my husband had a hard time with it - he was pretty freaked out by the whole thing.  Especially knowing he had a real job to do and I didn't want him to screw it up - I wanted that baby coming out asap.

autumn - 2006-07-19 1:04 PM (after a 3 day induction, 17+ hours of hard labor, almost 4 hours of pushing, and two 3rd degree tears), .

Best. Birth Control. Ever.

Castor Oil worked for the first, but not the second.  I bet I had the cleanest bowels during labor & delivery though.  LOL

Ha! That's hilarious. I bet that's one of the few times that it occurred to a male that he could "screw up" being on the receiving end of a BJ...

I have a friend who is currently 6 mos. pregnant, and she and her husband have been doing TONS of research on the whole pregnancy and birth topic. They found out from a Harvard study that the normal length of a pregnancy is NOT, in fact, 40 weeks. It's 41 weeks and 1 day.

I'm not saying that it's 100% the truth. It could be right, or it could be COMPLETELY off, but it might help to calm some of those "WHEN WILL THIS KID GET HERE?!?!" nerves...

true, and they are called PROSTAGLANDINS!!! present in semen and evening primrose oil, which doulas and traditional midwives advise to take orally and vaginally. if you are ever induced and they tell you they are giving you 'gels' to get your cervix to open...the gels are prostaglandins. i know the sourse for the gels, and trust me - sex with your SO is much better than getting gels. yucko.

Well...as the mom of five boys and all five were delivered at home with a midwife, no drugs or anything....

she would tell us to have lots and lots of SEX.  My husband loved her.  I think he was paying her in the side to tell me this cause he knew it was going to be six weeks before he got some after the baby.

And yes lots of SEX works.  Only one child was a week late.  All the other were before their due date.

So RocketMan...off to bed with you and the Mrs.

No idea how you can get RocketMan's kiddie to make an appearance. Never a problem for us as Julia popped the first out with ease, second out only twenty four minutes later. Most incredible thing I'd ever seen.

Only downside was that they were a tad early at twenty five weeks, something that stopped me from chastising them properly for years although I did get over that hang up a couple of months ago when they chewed up the lawn on their tractor at three in the morning having "been unable to sleep".

They are five and a half!

Best of luck to the three (soon to be four) of you.
