Pre-race routine:

Bagel and water. All packed the night before with the exception of my water bottle. It would be good to bring it with me, duh.
Event warmup:

Arm swinging and people talking. Normal stuff.
Swim
  • 09m 30s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

No training = no performance. Got to get more water time, like it or not!
What would you do differently?:

Train? Focus? Intensity? Form?

All of the above????
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Nice transition, continue working on improving these, there is a little time left here.
What would you do differently?:

Shouldn't have gone through the foot pool at the entrance, it wasn't helpful.

Comments:

OK, so this is where my race began and ended. I left the smooth road in Charlotte county and headed onto the rougher stuff. About 2.5 mile mark I was settling in, leaning a bit forward and moving about 22 MPH. Then the crap hit the fan. I hit a bump just as I was moving a bit on the bike, the back end went up. My hands went forward off the aero bars and my whole body pitched forward. Wrong place at the wrong time. I landed on my left side, got up, waved a few people past me, checked the bike, then got back on and got going again. I knew I was scratched up, but I didn't know how much, and I didn't check. Kept going, caught up to the folks that passed me and continued to pound along at about 21.5 - 22. Turn around was OK, got back up to speed, and then a few minutes later I heard the rear wheel hissing. Pulled over, pulled out CO2, and hoped for the best. Crap! Wheel off, tube out, tube in, wheel on and not enough air left in the CO2. And that is when I gave in. Someone asked if I needed help as they passed and I said "Yes, please" as I walked up the road. I finally looked at my legs and arms and figured out that I probably wouldn't have been allowed out of T2. Took a ride back from support and hit the med tent.
What would you do differently?:

Not crash, duh! Actually, the lesson here is tape on the aero bars, which goes on this week.

Warm down:

Sat in the med tent while the nice ladies put hydrogen peroxide on my entire left side. Friggin' OUCH!!! Then said "Thank you for giving your time" because they, like all volunteers, do not have to be here and without them there are no races.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury,

Event comments:

The race seemed a bit less prepared this year. I think the new RD got quite an education. This has to be a tough job and the previous RD was really good. He has a lot to live up to and I can't complain, since there is a learning curve. More volunteers on time would have been helpful, but I think he learned that.

Ouch, recover well.

No damage to the bike?  You will find another race and live to fight another day.

Bummer Chris.  So glad you weren't hurt worse and can get back at it.  Except for working on that swim training....you'll have open wounds for at least a week!

Sounds like the bike was okay too aside from the tube.  Nothing broken....all in all a successful crash if there is such a thing!

At least you can mark "crash" off the list of things that are likely to happen to you at least once every several years or so as a biker and triathlete.  Heal up.  Luckily this should not affect your core work Laughing

Chris :/  I'm sorry, man.  That sucks.  I don't know how any one goes over their handlebars at 22 mph and then gets back on and continues to race.  That is some serious HTFU, and maybe a little, teeny-tiny, teensy-weensy bit silly.  I love it.  Super cool that you tried to keep going, and I don't blame you one bit for calling it a day when you did.

H2O2?  EFF THAT!

Did they give you a strap to bite?

Crazy southerners

Ouchie, ouchie, ouchie. Tough as nails for getting up and right back on the bike, wow.  Guess you are in for some very painful showers for the next few days.  Glad you are relatively OK, when I read that you went over the handlebars I was concerned of a head injury or broken something.  Heal well, my friend.

Wow! Sorry you got bunged up! Glad you are (mostly) OK.

My mom used hydrogen peroxide. Hate that stuff.

Heal up!

Chris, sorry to hear about your mishap.  I remember passing you when you were dealing with your flat and asked if you were OK.  I saw the blood on the back of your left shoulder and figured you had gone down when you flatted; didn't know about your previous accident.  You said you were OK and not to stop; I feel a bit guilty about that now.

Parts of the bike course were pretty treacherous with all the standing water and sand on the road from the storms.  I'm surprised that more folks didn't go down.

Hope you can heal quickly and get back at it soon.

Mark

Eh, it's all part of the sport and process!

You had the benefit of learning and not getting too injured in the process.

I may have killed whomever had that peroxide though! Screw that!

Oh, and maybe jump into a pool every now and then.
